December 2020 Newsletter

Dear Subscribers,

As this year finally comes to a close, we hope you are staying safe and healthy, and continuing to push forward and remain connected with your industry peers! If 2020 confirmed anything, it's that we are all greater than the sum of our parts, and that by collaborating (and even commiserating) together over the past 9 months, your businesses and our association were able to survive!

The new year will of course bring with it new challenges, but here's to hoping that they will pale in comparison to those of 2020, especially now that the rollout of vaccines is becoming a reality and the US passed the next round of federal relief. No matter what happens, though, be proud of your resilience in the face of unimaginable and unprecedented challenges this year...and know that the SSIA is here to continue serving you in 2021 and beyond!

In this month's newsletter, we will share exciting news about the 2021 SSIA Conference and provide a summary on the next round of federal relief. We will also request member feedback in a survey designed to help quantitate the COVID-19 transmission risk within the adult sports league industry, and announce upcoming industry calls and news.

If you have any questions or comments, please send them to krissy@ssia.us.

2021 SSIA Conference
The 11th Annual SSIA Conference is going virtual in 2021 with the theme, "Building Your Bench".  We will be offering two half-day experiences focused on rebuilding, staffing and planning for vertical and horizontal growth in a post-COVID environment on Wednesday, February 17th and Thursday, February 18th.

We are excited to announce our keynote speaker, Reid Priddy, on the topic, "Picking Up the Pieces After a Major Setback and Creating an Environment Where Sustained Success is Imminent". He is a 4x Olympian, a Gold and Bronze Medalist for Team USA (2004-2016) competing in indoor volleyball, a 2019 AVP Manhattan Beach Open Champion, the author of the "Max Potential Playbook", and the Founder and CEO of the exciting new fitness startup company called INSAND.

Reid has spent his entire life pursuing how to maximize personal and collective max potential. Having played for some of the world's greatest coaches, and competing with some of the greatest athletes, Reid has synthesized 24 years of experience into the MXP Process, which is an actionable roadmap for anyone that is seeking to gain clarity and progress in his or her current pursuit, providing accessible tools that can help expedite the process of reaching their max potential.

Understanding the Coronavirus Stimulus Bill

Congress has agreed on, and President Trump has signed, the next stimulus package, along with FY21 spending, and a number of related items, including tax provisions.

As the SSIA continues to work with Terri Lakowski and Active Policy Solutions, we will be sure to provide you with updates as they become available.

For small businesses and organizations, there will be another round of the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) and additional $20 billion for targeted grants through the Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL).

The new round of PPP funding will allow for first and second loans and is expanded to include 501(c)(6) organizations. Also notable, for this round and the previous rounds, if an organization has their loan forgiven and they can show a net loss of revenue in 2020, they will NOT need to pay taxes of the amount forgiven. Up until now, all organizations having their loan forgiven were facing a tax charge for the amount forgiven.

The other new small business provision is a set aside of $15 billion for live venues, independent movie theaters, and cultural institutions.

Please email krissy@ssia.us if you have specific questions, and we will ask APS to answer them for you.

Outdoor Sports Safety Survey
As some markets across the US and Canada are either being forced to remain closed or close again, the SSIA is working to quantitate the "Social Sports Industry Rate of Player Transmissions" risk from COVID-19 within the adult sports league industry as a whole.

This information should not be used towards marketing efforts! The data will be aggregated and shared with SSIA members to provide them with talking points that they can share with their government officials and municipalities in their efforts to return to play.

Please note that individual responses will not be shared, and that SSIA staff (Krissy Greenleaf and Galen Beers) will be the only ones with access to this information.  For questions, please email krissy@ssia.us.
