Our team in Nicaragua has been busy relocating hundreds of eggs to our hatcheries as the last couple of months our female leatherbacks and green sea turtles have been nesting quite frequently.
In fact, we are witnessing a mama leatherback who has actually returned to our program sites FIVE times since October 27th and has laid a total of 291 eggs already! While this is not so unusual for a leatherback, the fact that she travelled to both site locations: Las Penitas and Salinas Grandes, AND nested right in front of our hatcheries, tells us she is some smart sea turtle!
We think she should have an appropriate name for her consistency and intelligence. We will be launching a special “Name our Mama Leatherback” this coming January and hope you will participate by submitting a vote for your favorite name!
