What A Year!

As we are working through the 2020 EwA conservation report, which we'll publish early next year, we are reminded of all the craziness that we had to go through as both an organization and a community to adjust to a COVID-19 dominated world! I think that we will all agree that we can't wait for this year to end!

Despite the circumstances, so much has been accomplished this year thanks to an incredible core team, fantastic citizen scientists and interns, and awesome supporters. I mean it! As I am crunching numbers and developing summary visualizations I am blown away by the engagement of our community. Here's a peep: EwA ran more than 387 dedicated events for 2020 alone.

What exactly were we doing out there? A quick glance at our records tells a great citizen science story: 294 of our 387 events were in the field being busy observing, recording, and cataloging critical information for biodiversity and climate sciences. For instance, this year we have recorded more than 31,000 species observations (biodiversity), and more than 43,172 seasonal phases and activities (phenology)! Compared to last year's records total (17,866 species observations and 16,332 pheno-records respectively), it's impressive. Thanks for the leadership of our core team and for the help of all EwA observers!

EwA started a lot of new projects this year–and there's so much more to report–but I'll leave it at that for now. The full report is coming soon. Don't miss it! Meanwhile, we invite you all to join our virtual events, to try a nature activity on your own or with your close ones, and to get outside and experience nature with us at a safe distance. Join our citizen science team to get a taste of what EwA's contribution to science is all about, and gain incredible field skills and a nature-focused family.

Our community of naturalists is out there, growing stronger, and making a difference for all and for nature. Thanks to you all again! Happy end of 2020, and let's get prepared for an incredible 2021!

EwA Winter Events
Studying Nature's Cycles & Helping Wildlife Together
EwA's walks and field sessions are happening with small groups & with distance rules in place to keep us all healthy. Places are limited and we ask our attendance to follow a register-and-commit rule so as to not prevent someone else from getting in! Check the EwA Calendar for the full list of events. Here are a few...
Nature Observation & Documentation Walk. Biodiversity walks and chats happen at different locations including at the Growing Center. Bring a warm beverage, and we'll walk you through the many urban wildlife wonders right there at the Center. Check it out on Eventbrite. [Details & Registration →]
Geology & Ecology at the Fells! Join Tom and EwA's team for a special treat: A snippet of the geology of the Fells There is a lot to see out in the Middlesex Fells as the seasons pass, and of course ecology will stay in the mix. Find out more and sign up on the event page. [Details & Registration →]
EwA Nature Virtual Hours. We’d love to see you in our weekly nature hour! This is an informal virtual meeting we have every week at EwA to stay connected and share our favorite nature stories. You’ll usually hear a cool fact from Mike, an interesting field story from Claire, and lots more! [Details & Registration →]

The EwA Naturalist
Connecting with Nature - Open Science
Help us Help Urban Biodiversity

At EwA, we connect deeply with nature through co-creative citizen science. Our model is one of science by the people, benefiting both People and Nature. Together we gain knowledge of our ecosystems, and help the conservation of species interactions. Where we live in Massachusetts, our communities get a chance to experience what this means first-hand with EwA's Nature Documentation program.

EwA's Seasonal Activities
The changing of the seasons offers a great opportunity to learn more about the nature around you. Check out these helpful EwA articles!
Winter Celebration » Winter is here, a period for nature to pause and slow down (and survive). It's a time where Life sleeps in dens, in buds and hidden places...
Birds' World » In this Nature Circle, we peep into the lives of birds, and practice the skills of observing, identifying, sketching, and marveling at their interactions. Enjoy! ツ
EwA Community
Meet our Leaders, Interns, Citizen Scientists & Naturalists
To our community: It’s hard to count exactly the combined number of volunteer visits between both field and virtual events, but we estimate roughly that together you paid us about 1,400 visits (in-field and online) this year. That means a lot to us and you're all making EwA possible! Thanks!
