What a year!

Needless to say, 2020 is one we won’t soon forget. The COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest on a national scale, and a prolific, nail-biting hurricane season made for an extraordinarily challenging year. Lives have been altered in countless ways, and so many of our neighbors are in tremendous need. Despite these trying times, we should all be very proud of our city. We are hanging in there. Houstonians have pulled together to help each other, to see things from a different perspective, to give until it hurts. We love our city and it shows. 

While the topics dominating the landscape at city hall may not have started out as expected, my team and I experienced a very productive and rewarding year. As an at-large representative, I stay focused on issues affecting residents citywide – budget, transportation, infrastructure, public safety. As chair of the Regulatory and Neighborhood Affairs Committee, I’ve zeroed in on matters impacting the quality of life in Houston neighborhoods – illegal dumping, regulation of hazardous materials in residential areas, bar/nightclub-related nuisances, stray animals. As a board member of the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) and an alternate to H-GAC’s Transportation Policy Council, I’m gaining insight into how the city works with its many partners toward improvements for the region. 

There is no shortage of problems to solve, ordinances to improve, policies to strengthen, budgets to tighten. It’s all about the work, and lucky for me, I truly love this work. 
Everything I’ve accomplished this year is due to my exceptional staff. I say this because I was a city hall staffer for years – I know what it takes, and my team has far exceeded my expectations. Jordan, Julia, Hannah, Mike, and Jannet are conscientious, loyal, talented, and compassionate. They keep me on track and keep me laughing, and I’m incredibly thankful for their dedication and willingness to deliver responsive government to residents across the city. 

So, here’s to brighter days ahead! A vaccine is here, and hopefully we will soon get off our laptops and greet each other in person. I can’t wait.
