Winter Woodlot Tour - February 6th in Rustico

TREC was recently invited to join the committee that organizes the Winter Woodlot Tour. We are joining forces with three other watershed groups to hold the Winter Woodlot Tour again this year. We are back where we held the first Woodlot Tour ten years ago, on Buffalo Road in Rustico. Back in 2011 we had only plowed 20 parking spaces, having no idea how popular the event would be! The event will be on February 6th from 9am to 1pm, with a storm date of February 20th. You will have to enter Buffalo Road from Church Road end, as the road is only plowed part-way. Please keep an eye on the website, www.winterwoodlottour.ca, or the facebook page, for more information as the time approaches. We will have a horse logging demonstration, free hot cider, displays about wildlife and forests, maple syrup tapping, chainsaw maintenance, invasive species, tracking and trapping, and much more – and a chance to try out some snowshoes. We thank the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund for providing most of the funding for this popular event. The WCF receives its funding partly from conservation license plates – so make sure to renew your plate with a conservation plate if you haven’t already done so. And bring a face mask, which you will have to wear to the event, and dress warmly as there may be a short wait to enter because of covid precautions.

TREC has renewed the contract of one of our winter/spring students. Kelsey will continue to work on management plans, mapping and analyzing data, designing signs for the Devil’s Punchbowl trails, and helping with spring run-off surveys and bat surveys. We are busy reporting on last year’s projects and applying for funding for next summer, sorting through data collected last year, and making plans for our 2021 projects. Many thanks to the 154 landowners who gave us permission to enter their properties to do stream surveys and other work last year – your help and cooperation makes our restoration work so much easier. If we didn’t visit your property in 2020, then we hope to be able to get there this year. And a Happy New Year to all!
