The theological principle that has been foremost in my mind recently is idolatry -- what happens when we make anything other than God ultimate, and God becomes a footnote to our own constructions of identity, meaning, and purpose. We have seen idolatry and its sister blasphemy writ large over the past days. While there is certainly no moral equivalence between someone whose favorite idolatry leads them to participate in a shocking crime like lynching, sedition, or murder, and someone whose favorite idolatry leads them to overeat or to hoard money, the great reformer John Calvin was right in saying that the human heart is a perpetual factory of idols. Whenever people hand over the formation of their identity, meaning, and purpose to idols, the possibility of grave evil exists. Whenever people "repent and return to the Lord," the possibility of healing and reconciliation comes.
This Week's Highlights
VIRTUAL EVENSONG PREMIERE!
It's a full Evensong, premiering January 17th at 7 p.m. on YouTube for the feast of the Confession of St. Peter! Current video of lay readers, our rector and choirmaster, and performances by our organist, combine with archival choir recordings, drone footage, and artwork to produce a full 40-minute Rite 1 Evensong service. Set your reminder on the YouTube page, then join us at 7 p.m. on the 17th to live chat during the premiere.

ANNUAL MEETING
Since we cannot gather in person this year, the 2021 Annual Meeting of Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church will take place via Zoom.  As usual, we will celebrate our life in the year past, review the Vestry-approved 2021 Budget, elect Vestry members, Officers, and Synod delegates, and hear all such business as may properly come before the annual meeting of the parish. To make attendance as convenient as possible for all, the vestry has set the time for 7 p.m. on Wednesday January 27th.

The Zoom link for this meeting is the same as for all our worship services, and will appear here every week leading up to the meeting. If you do not have a computer or smartphone, you may dial in from any ordinary phone. Dial 1-312-626-6799, and then enter Meeting ID: 208 217 0000 and Password: 61820

ANNUAL MEETING DOCUMENTS
Emmanuel's 2020 financial reports and Annual Report will be sent out in an all-parish email, as well as made available for download, before the meeting (7 p.m. Wednesday January 27th on Zoom.) Relevant sections will be shared on the screen during the meeting as well. If you would like to receive a hard copy of either report via US Mail, please contact Mary in the office.

VIDEO TEACHING SERIES
Have you ever stopped and asked yourself what the word "god" actually means? Or what about "sin" or "gospel"? If you've ever found yourself wondering what these oft-used Christian words mean, then the upcoming video series from Emmanuel is for you! Join Marisa on Thursdays as she seeks out definitions of common Christian terms and asks questions of them that can lead to some exciting theological territory. And, if there's a term or a phrase that you've ever wondered about, send Marisa an email. She may cover that next!
