Compassion Conquers Hate
January 14, 2021

First, From the Heart

Most of us are interested in creating a world fit for our children and the generations that follow. We see it, we feel it, we know it can be done. And yet we are stumbling over each other, pointing fingers and guns, to make our positions known.

Humanity no longer thrives on the unjust systems of yore. We as leaders are capable of finding the way forward, with equity, belonging, respect, and safety for all. While it’s tempting to spend our time and energy looking outward for solutions, the hard work starts inside each of us. Do the work. Be the change. Our future depends on it.

Compassion Over Hate

The anger and hate currently growing in the United States are deeply troubling. But how do we respond? It takes a great deal of courage to resist the urge to scream back at someone screaming at you, but that is exactly what we need to do. Take these four steps to use your compassion to respond productively to hate. Read more.

Practice Matters

Beyond Anger and Hate

Emotions can be painful and get the best of us. We are often conditioned to deny our feelings by stuffing them down, pushing them away, or ignoring them altogether. Perhaps they fade for a bit, and then pop back into our lives with even more intensity and intractability. Our bodies know the truth of our feelings. Think about the times emotions have “eaten away” at you. Less volatile emotions beget fear, shame, anger and hate when they return again and again.

The more we practice, the more we learn to handle our difficult emotions. We observe. We acknowledge what is – feel the feels and accept that which is present within us. Not easy, but worth the effort. Emotions are energy in motion. Allow the emotion to ride its own wave and be with it until it dissipates. The charge will wear off and we return to harmony.

As you witness the anger and hate in others, have compassion – they have yet to reckon with their emotions swirling beneath the surface of their dangerous outer expression. Only love can transmute hate. Let your love be contagious so that others can feel the safety and security deep within you. This is the road to healing, and peace.

When can we practice? Always!
