‘Gone but never forgotten’, that was the theme of the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) online Memorial Service held via Microsoft Teams on Tuesday, 12 January 2020, to pay tribute to the members of the DUT community who have recently passed on due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Facilitating the memorial service was Professor Livingstone Makondo from DUT’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT)who said the service was held to celebrate the lives of DUT staff members who have recently departed because of COVID-19.
DUT AWARDED THE FEENIX UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) was recently awarded the Feenix University of the Year Award 2020 for going beyond the call of duty in partnering with Feenix to assist students in meeting their financial obligations.
Advancement and Alumni Relations Director at DUT, Zwakele Ngubane said Feenix recently shared the exciting news via e-mail communication, that it has awarded the DUT team the University of the Year Award in appreciation of the team’s continued willingness to go beyond the call of duty, valuable collaborative partnership and contribution towards ensuring that access to education is not dependent on wealth.
PROF MARKS AIMS TO BECOME A ‘TRAILBLAZER’ IN COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Becoming a ‘trailblazer’ in community engagement is what drives the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Professor Monique Marks, Director at the Urban Futures Centre (UFC), to show the seriousness of where DUT wants to take community engagement.
The Urban Futures Centre at DUT (UFC@DUT) is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. It serves as the central node for a network of projects, institutions, practitioners and academics involved in the future of cities locally and internationally. Supporting the activities of the centre is a concern with the real people who live in cities, and their future.
Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Nomali Khumalo, a first year Video Technology student recently won DUT’s Annual Creative Writing Competition
Khumalo who claims writing has always been her passion is ecstatic after she had taken first place in her first-ever writing competition. Annually, the competition is run by the DUT Writing Centre and is part of a student development initiative where all full-time DUT undergraduates can participate. There are three genres, short stories, poems and essays. In this year’s competition, students stand to win a laptop among other prizes. The aim of the competition is to promote both academic and creative writing.
