Ethical use of Technology

Ethics by Design” : An Organizational Approach to Responsible Use of Technology, is a collaborative report released in December in partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Deloitte. The report blends insights to create a model that keeps ethics up to date with technology. Technological development cannot be done in a vacuum; there must be considerations for societal impacts and this report guides executives on practical tools and approaches for such considerations.

2020-21 Environmental Ethics Fellows

The work of the 2020-21 Environmental Ethics Fellows is underway. Taylor Ellis '20Mary Kleinsmith '22, and Rebecca Poirier '21 are working towards creating a more thoughtful business model of sustainability amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Applications Open for 2021-22 Health Care Ethics Internship

The Markkula Center invites rising juniors and seniors interested in biotechnology, bioengineering, health policy, health care law, and health care administration to apply to the Health Care Ethics Internship. The internship is a year-long experience consisting of rotations through hospitals and medical centers, as well as weekly class meetings for discussion and reflection. An information meeting for applicants will be held at 6:30 p.m. PST Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021. Applications due: Feb. 28, 2021.

Gender and Racial Bias in Venture Capital

Research shows that gender and racial biases continue to persist among investors, and in some cases the biases have actually risen in 2020. Panel discussion co-hosted with the Association Corporate Growth Silicon Valley (ACGSV) in collaboration with the School of Engineering and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

• Dr. Charles Binkley, director of bioethics quoted in The Boston Globe said, "Medical ethics begins with the assumption that all people are equal, that every life has value,” when talking about power, privilege, and the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Ann Skeet, senior director of leadership ethics quoted on Marketwatch regarding the Google Workers Union stating that “equally important to workforces in the valley is some sort of agency” over their work
