CONTENTS

Dear <<First Name>>,

As we contemplate the new year, looking both inwardly and outwardly, I encourage you to consider how you want to feel in 2021 and the ways you might create that feeling. In our admin meeting this week, we meditated on this question and shared our dreams and goals for the year. When we move from a place of inner peace, presence, safety, balance and satisfaction, we are better able to have this feeling reflected not only in our work or study but also in our families and relationships. By connecting with the things that inspire us and seeking reinvigoration, we continue to instill hope and purpose in our children.

If you did not read the email sent last Friday to parents regarding updates to our VWS Health & Safety Handbook – COVID-19, please take the time to read it here vws.ca/winter-health-safety-update. A number of parents have reached out to us over the past week seeking clarity, sharing perspectives, and offering feedback on current health and safety protocols. We value your input and are committed to the regular review of our practices and approach. Thank you for your partnership in encouraging and cultivating a conscientious and thoughtful school culture.

Finally, thank you as well for bundling up your children each day and encouraging them to wear weather-appropriate clothing and shoes as the thermometer dips to cooler temperatures.

WWF-CANADA'S GO WILD SCHOOL GRANT RECIPIENT

WWF-Canada’s Go Wild School Grant program supports teacher, student and campus efforts to help nature thrive.

We are one of 100 K-12 level schools across Canada to be awarded a World Wildlife Fund Canada Go Wild grant of $500. Since 2015, WWF-Canada has funded 369 Go Wild school and campus projects, totalling $184,500. Whether growing native plant gardens, building bat boxes, monitoring local wildlife, restoring creeks, or raising awareness about conservation issues, every Go Wild project has the same goal: to make a tangible difference for local nature and wildlife. Applications are accepted every fall, with projects taking place the following spring and summer.

Native Plant Communities
At VWS, students will participate in schoolyard restoration, replacing invasive species with native plants. Through weekly gardening classes throughout the year, the gardens will be built and cared for. The students and teachers are already planning for long-term care, including regular plant sales of the harvests to sustain the garden's costs.

Thank you to Vanessa Faryan Amadio for successfully applying for this grant for our school and for leading the program in collaboration with Bonnie Gosse and Chris Henley.

The Vancouver Waldorf School is situated on the unceded ancestral territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
