Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5, Myaskovsky: Symphony No. 21

Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Vasily Petrenko [LAWO Classics]

AN EXCITING SYMPHONIC COUPLE

After completing their much-appraised cycle of Alexander Scriabin’s and Richard Strauss’ orchestral works, the Oslo Philharmonic and their former chief conductor Vasily Petrenko present the first of two releases of symphonic works by Prokofiev and Myaskovsky. Sergei Prokofiev may be considered by many to be among the major symphonists of his time. He described his Symphony No. 5, his first composition in this genre for sixteen years, as “…the culmination of an entire period in my work. I conceived it as a symphony on the grandeur of the human spirit.” He regarded this symphony, composed in the summer of 1944, as his finest work.

Nikolai Myaskovsky was certainly one of the most prolific symphonic composers of the twentieth century. He took private lessons with Glière in Moscow. Then, having decided to devote himself to composition, he studied with Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Establishing what would prove to be a life-long friendship with Prokofiev. Myaskovsky composed his Symphony No. 21 with a commission from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Paganini: 24 Caprices + 1

>> 1 Week Ahead of Official Release Date
>> Recorded & released with no DXD post-processing, mixing and EQ (equalization)

Ning Feng, violin [Channel Classics Records]

Paganini’s success as a violin virtuoso was naturally only partly based on the fantastical, mysterious and demonic atmosphere that surrounded him. What his professional admirers captivated most of all was his unparalleled playing technique. The best impression of his musical and technical accomplishment can be gained from his most talked-about work, the 24 Caprices opus 1 (1817), which were modelled on the similarly named pieces by Pietro Locatelli (1733). To this day the 24 Caprices are still considered the bible of violin technique. (…)
– Clemens Romijn [from liner notes]

• + 1: Remarkable Caprice d’Adieu forms the conclusion of this album.
Ning Feng won First Prize in the International Violin Competition Premio Paganini in Genoa, 2006.
• While being ‘in between Strads’ at the time, Ning Feng immensely enjoyed recording Paganini’s Caprices on his own very fresh sounding instrument: a 2017 Samuel Zygmuntowicz violin.
• Album Producer and Recording Engineer Jared Sacks tells NativeDSD that the DSD 256 Stereo and DSD 256 Multichannel editions of this album at NativeDSD are very special. This recording stayed in DSD 256 throughout the entire process (no conversion to DXD, no mixing or EQ - equalization).

Telemann: Polonoise

Holland Baroque, Aisslinn Nosky [PENTATONE]

Choose options

Holland Baroque returns to NativeDSD with another of their fine and unique DSD Stereo and DSD Multichannel releases.

The players of Holland Baroque continue their Pentatone journey with Polonoise, a program for curious listeners who want to discover a different side of Telemann. His manuscript Danses d’Polonie (TWV 45), in which he wrote down the dance music he heard during his Polish travels, was the impetus for this album. Taking this as a point of departure, Holland Baroque and violinist Aisslinn Nosky explore how Telemann applied the Polish style in his own works. Polonoise takes the listener on an imaginary journey to the wild nature, the slopes, and the picturesque village taverns of Poland.

Arranged by the ensemble’s artistic leaders Judith and Tineke Steenbrink, Telemann’s Polish concertos and dances sound brisker than ever before.

Holland Baroque is an original and innovative baroque orchestra that approaches baroque repertoire through a fresh and contemporary outlook, with a focus on improvisation and collaborations with outstanding artists from different traditions. Polonoise is their second Pentatone release, after their well-received DSD album Silk Baroque (2019), together with Wu Wei. And many more Holland Baroque recordings are available in the NativeDSD Music Store on the label Channel Classics.

Aisslinn Nosky, one of the most pioneering and adventurous violinists of the Northern-American early music scene, makes her Pentatone debut on this DSD Release.

Shirley Horn: Softly [Remastered in DSD and DXD]

Shirley Horn: Vocals, Piano | Charles Ables: Bass | Steve Williams: Drums [2xHD]

This Analog Recording from the Jazzology Records catalog is so remarkable that 2xHD decided to remaster it and release it in DSD and DXD. Shirley Horn is really amazingly on target with her approach to every tune she performed. The reflective mood of this album captures the late-night intimacy of the recording sessions.

As Gary Giddens has observed, Shirley Horn can “swing your socks off”. Her performances here, protected from the time-is-money anxiety and clinical ambiance of commercial recording studios, and surrounded by devoted friends and inevitably, food, is more introspective and emotionally intense than anything she has recorded to date.

In a recent interview, singer Carol Sloane said: “Shirley takes total command, and she is sitting at the piano when she does it, which is even wilder. She swings and sings the blues; she sings the beJesus out of the blues… She is the best singer/piano player in the world. And that’s the truth… She has an enormous presence at the piano, and I am very struck with it. It makes me starry-eyed”.

The album Softly features Since I Fell For You by Buddy Johnson, I Watch You Sleep by Richard Rodney Bennett, Softly As I Leave You by Tony DeVita, How Long Has This Been Going On? by George and Ira Gershwin, Dindi by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Estate (Summer) by Bruno Martino.

Novgorod the Great Festival Peals [Live DXD Recording]

Novgorod the Great Bellringers Festival Ensemble [Artes Mirabiles]

Despite the of prohibition of bell peals after the revolution in 1917, which lasted for several decades during the Soviet period, the culture of the Orthodox peal is still widely spread across Russia. It has survived, and is known to everyone in modern Russia, regardless of their faith, because the sound of bells goes far beyond the buildings of the Orthodox church. The tradition of bell-ringing is, however, almost unknown outside the Orthodox world and sounds very strange to people whose cultural background was formed by European tonal music in which bells are used either in clock chimes or as a carillon.

This new post on the NativeDSD Blog seeks to assist in understanding this unique Russian tradition..

Nils Henrik Asheim and Johan Harstad: Grader av hvitt, Degrees of White

This is a Double Album: Same Music with Norwegian and English reading.

Track 5-8 English Reading

This work contains elements of a symphony, melodrama, radio theater, and the art of sound. The whole must be heard in order to be described. The composer himself says:

“Degrees of White is, without comparison, the most complex work I have ever created. Strangely enough, it is also the one that speaks most directly.

It has been a somewhat shaky process to work through its creation, from the very beginning fifteen years ago until recently, where I have used this available “corona time” to complete the mix of the tracks of the orchestra, electronics, voice, and sounds created by materials such as gravel, shells, glass, and Styrofoam.”

Degrees of White was commissioned and premiered by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Christian Eggen leads The Norwegian Radio Orchestra on this recording. Laila Goody reads the Norwegian version and the English is by Petronella Barker. Noise musician Lasse Marhaug provided the electronic sounds used in the recording.
