UK Disability Survey
 
The Disability Unit at the Cabinet Office is developing a National Strategy for Disabled People. To help the government with understanding the barriers that disabled people face and what it may need to focus upon to improve the lives of disabled people, we need to hear about your views and know more about your experiences. This survey will ask about your life experiences either as a disabled person, a carer or parent or as someone who has an interest in disability issues. [Read more]
Research on Part M: access to and use of buildings

MHCLG has published research to support the evaluation of Part M and Approved Document M of the Building Regulations.  Part 1 evaluates what evidence is available on the benefits of accessible housing, and where further evidence is needed.  Part 2 looks at what evidence is available to understand how well current guidance in Part M is meeting the needs of disabled people.[Read more]

New Accessibility in the Built Environment EU Standard
 
BSI have published the new EU standard BS EN 17210:2021 'Accessibility and usability of the built environment. Functional requirements'.  The document describes basic, minimum functional requirements and recommendations for an accessible and usable built environment, following "Design for All"/"Universal Design" principles which will facilitate equitable and safe use for a wide range of users, including persons with disabilities. [Read more]
Inclusive Design in Essential Services
 
Fair By Design and the Money Advice Trust have launched two new practical guides for regulators and firms on how to embed inclusive design in policy development and product design, to significantly improve outcomes for consumers. [Read more]
Over half English local housing policies still failing disabled & older people

In the next 10 years, 70% of all new homes will not have to meet any accessible housing standard new research by accessible housing leader, Habinteg Housing Association shows.  Updated analysis of English ‘local plans’ shows the proportion of new homes to be built by 2030 to accessible standards fell from 34.4% in the 2019 analysis to 31.5% in the 2020 update.  [Read more]
WeCanAccess Student Challenge

WeCanAccess has teamed up with Disability Review Magazine to challenge university students to write articles that will inspire better inclusion and accessibility. [Read more]
Disabled people’s right to use coach services
 
The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) believes that coach travel, like all other forms of public transport, should be accessible to disabled people. Indeed, there are good economic reasons for the industry to maximise the accessibility of services, as the age group who travel the most miles by coach is the over-70s, a growing age group with the highest levels of disability. [Read more]
