Thank you Ana Hernández!

Dear Cristo Rey De La Salle Community:

Please join me in thanking Ms. Ana Hernández for her years of service as the Founding Principal of Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School. Ms. Hernández recently informed me of her plans to move on from her role as Principal on June 30, 2021 (please see her accompanying letter that follows).

Words fail to express the monumental impact that Ms. Hernández has had - and will continue to have - upon our Cristo Rey De La Salle family. Ms. Hernández has been a stabilizing force of our school community since we first opened our doors to our students. She will leave many great legacies, but possibly the greatest is that Ms. Hernández will depart from us with our school community in an extraordinary place of mission success, academic excellence, and high-quality care for our students. Along with our talented and dedicated faculty and staff, we are primed to continue our student-centered teaching and learning by providing our students with a top notch educational experience. Our mission and vision have a very bright future and we have Ms. Hernández to thank for the strong foundation she will leave behind. Ms. Hernández will be with us throughout the remainder of this academic year and we look forward to celebrating her later this spring. Thank youMs. Hernández and we wish you and your family all our Mustang very best.

I will be forming a Principal search committee immediately to assist me in finding the next Principal of Cristo Rey De La Salle. With the support of the search committee, and in collaboration with the Lasallian District and the Cristo Rey Network, I look forward to designing an inclusive search process that will include opportunities for your important and valuable input to inform our efforts. We intend to name the next Principal this Spring in order to allow for a successful transition in preparation for the next academic year.

I appreciate that change can be difficult, and recognize that these extraordinary times in which we find ourselves provide many considerations for leading our institution. I assure you that I will update you, our Cristo Rey De La Salle community, on an ongoing basis as to our steps and progress in selecting our next Principal. I also remain steadfast in my confidence in our students and in our dedicated faculty and staff. While we learn and grow together throughout this time of transition, let us trust that our mission to “educate young people to become men and women of faith, purpose, and service” remains constant and that our commitment to the youth entrusted to our care never wavers.

Sincerely,
Stephen Murphy
President

A Message from our Founding Principal

Dear CRDLS Community:

The year 2020 brought so much change. For me, it created opportunities to reflect, to re-evaluate, to slow down, to look deep within. As we enter the year 2021 it is easy to yearn for change, for things to return to a sense of “normalcy”, and yet, I have to remind myself not to be so stubborn. What does normalcy even mean? I often wonder if 2020 was meant to remind us of the things that really matter, to value the bare necessities; love, health, hope, faith, joy, peace, nature, God’s gifts, shelter, family. I have certainly taken the time to better understand my core values, beliefs, desires, dreams and goals. Simply put, to better understand myself.

I have learned during this quarantine that CRDLS has taught me so much. I have been so fortunate to see part of the vision and mission I joined back in 2017 come alive. It is truly a dream come true. We have been through so much as a new Lasallian community and I am very grateful and extremely PROUD.

Through my time at CRDLS I have learned that I am a builder at heart. I have also learned that we have to be able to recognize when it is time to move on. I’ve recently accepted another leadership role at a different school, beginning July 1, 2021. I will be stepping down as Founding Principal of CRDLS at the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year. It is time for someone with new ideas and a renewed sense of commitment to lead our community into its exciting next phase.

It is no surprise that a strong foundation has been laid. We have an incredible and extremely talented teaching team and I am confident that our school community will continue to thrive. In my fifteen plus years in school leadership roles, I have learned that good leaders, not only attract and develop great teams, but they rely on the team to make the magic happen by providing them with the support systems to thrive. Strong leaders are humble enough to recognize when it is time for new energy, new talent to further develop the foundation that has been laid.

My heart is heavy, yet also so full. I will leave CRDLS on June 30th with my head up high, proud of the incredible things we have accomplished and extremely excited for what the future holds. I am the first one to admit, change happens fast and transitions take time. The year 2020 brought about so much change, and as people we are learning to cope and process this change. Let us not forget however, that God is walking this journey along with us. We will be alright, the future is bright.

CRDLS will forever hold a very special place in my heart. It is not every day that one has the opportunity to be a Founding Principal, let alone a Founding Principal of such an incredible school. My Mustangs, YOU have taught me so much. Don’t lose sight of your dream, don’t allow for other’s decisions to deter you, on the other hand, always remember that every challenge is an opportunity! Don’t wait for things to happen, GO out and make them happen.

To our families, thank you for your partnership, your support, but most importantly for entrusting our team, entrusting me with the care and education of your children. I am forever grateful! This is not a goodbye or a farewell yet. We have a lot of work to do as we finish out the 2020-2021 school year, and I look forward to staying connected beyond this year...The Fruitvale is my home, my community, and it always will be.

With love always,
Ana Hernández
Founding Principal
