The International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF) awards two graduate-level scholarships typically valued at $3,000 USD to Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Ph.D. students studying wildland fire or wildland fire-related topics. Student submitted essays are evaluated by an international panel of fire science experts and one award recipient is chosen for the Masters level and one for the Doctoral level. The IAWF has been presenting this award annually to members of the fire science community since 2007. | LEARN MORE

We had a great turnout for our Annual General Meeting that we held virtually in December. We are pleased to share the recording of the meeting for those who were unable to attend and for those who want to revisit any of the presentations. In addition to the updates from each of the committees we were honored to hear from Dr. Stephen Pyne, noted fire historian and a strong supporter of the IAWF mentorship program. | WATCH

The COVID-19 pandemic has combined with vast wildfires in Kenya to place a great strain on an already overburdened wildland fire response system. Kenya typically experiences long rains from March to May, and then short rains from October to December. June through August is mainly cool and dry over most parts of the country.

Alaska is nearly 18% of USA landmass. Its size is often unappreciated, as it’s frequently shown in whole without other states as reference. It stores about 1/3 of US carbon, and is the only place in the United States where permafrost exists, as both a value and a hazard.
