Dear Friend,

There are two weeks left to help us find our next legal fellow!

Our Michael Ratner Justice Fellowship affords us an exciting opportunity to work with recent law graduates who are passionate about movement lawyering and supporting the movement for Palestinian freedom.

Applications are due on January 29, for a projected start date of September, 2021. The fellowship is a two-year position.

Please share this email with anyone who may be interested and may qualify. And if you are that person, we encourage you to apply!

See below for more details.

Below you will also find more coverage of Fordham SJP's case challenging their university's ban on their student club. We are working hard to appeal last month's appellate decision against Fordham SJP that has been described by some as "a masterwork of laziness and willful ignorance."

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable weekend,

Kristian Bailey

Open Position: Michael Ratner Justice Fellow
Current Michael Ratner Justice Fellow Amira Mattar leading a Know Your Rights Workshop at the 2019 National SJP conference.

Palestine Legal seeks a 2-year paid legal fellow to join Palestine Legal’s team in providing direct legal assistance to and advocating on behalf of people who face suppression for expressing views in favor of Palestinian rights.

The Fellow will be at the center of Palestine Legal’s intake, legal advocacy and litigation work. The Fellow will work in collaboration with Palestine Legal staff, partner attorneys and activist groups, clients, and others in challenging the suppression of Palestine advocacy. They will also communicate about our legal work with the media and engage with different constituencies through public speaking and Know Your Rights workshops.

The ideal candidate for this fellowship is a recent law graduate (0-3 years) who thrives in a small, dynamic, collaborative and professional environment, is passionate about social justice issues and movement lawyering approaches, and has exceptional public speaking, writing and relational skills. The Fellow will report to a senior staff attorney.

The strong preference is for the Fellow to be located in Palestine Legal’s New York office.

Applications will be reviewed until January 29, 2021.

Fordham SJP In The News
Credit: Fordham Students for Justice in Palestine
Last month in a hasty decision short on analysis, a New York appellate division court reversed a thorough, well-reasoned ruling by the trial court that Fordham University violated its own policies when it refused to recognize a Students for Justice in Palestine club.

Recent coverage of the decision highlights student voices and provides independent analysis of the ruling.
From The Fordham Observer:  “The court’s decision is so ridiculous and shallow,” Veer Shetty, VP of Fordham SJP said. “I am glad we get another opportunity to fight this shameful decision.”

“All we want to do is advocate for Palestinian liberation, but we are being suppressed,” said Anita Kwok, secretary of SJP. “It’s even more infuriating that Fordham continues to suppress us during a pandemic where the university is facing more dire issues than a group of students in a book club."

From The College Fix: "The three-page ruling by David Friedman, Dianne Renwick, Anil Singh, Tanya Kennedy and Martin Shulman is a masterwork of laziness and willful ignorance...

"The good news is the plaintiffs are filing an appeal with the New York Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court. Palestine Legal and the Center for Constitutional Rights used quite the restraint in calling the reversal 'a hasty decision short on analysis.'

Since I’m not on the legal team, however, I can call the decision what it is: a steaming pile of garbage by a garbage appeals court."
