Navigating In A Kayak

Friday January 15th

Ascot Kayak Club, Fauntleroy Avenue, Ascot

Do you want to try navigating in a kayak?
The Ascot Kayak Club is running a mini adventure race on Friday 15th January. The plan is:
- Make up a team of two or three;
- Paddle 2.5km to 5km and locate at least 5 checkpoints (loan boats available if you don't have one);
- Run (or walk) 1.5km to 4km and find at least 10 checkpoints;
- At each checkpoint record the answers to questions about that checkpoint.
All in the space of 60 minutes.
Then, when you've finished, enjoy a BBQ (included in the entry fee)!

You must register beforehand via the event website, by midday on Friday 15th January.

Why not give it a go?

Upcoming Event 1: MetrO 8, North Fremantle

Saturday 16th January

Gilbert Fraser Reserve, John St, North Fremantle

It’s not often that MetrO events have a grandstand view, but this week the North Fremantle event starts from the stands at Gilbert Fraser Reserve. You will have a prime view of the Swan River and a couple of cricket matches, not to mention the likes of tRicky and Liam steaming into the Finish.
Long course runners (and anyone who cares to visit after the event) will also have a great view over the river and Fremantle from Mt Lyell in the north of the map.
The area includes bushland, sandy beaches, high cliffs, hidden parks, and World War 2 guns. Noel has even included the spot where he got married!
The Grandstand Bar will be open for refreshments after the event.

Courses: Short (2-3km), Medium (4-6km) and Long (7-8km).
Pre-enter via Eventor (entries close at 23:59pm on Friday 15th January). If you do not have an Eventor account, click on ‘Create Account’ and follow the prompts.

Upcoming Event 3: MetrO 9, Mullaloo

Saturday 23rd January

Tom Simpson Park, Oceanside Promenade, Mullaloo

Event 9 of the MetrO series takes place in Mullaloo, right on the coast. The start is less than 50m away from the ocean, making for a perfect afternoon of orienteering and a possible dip in the water afterwards. The map comprises some suburban running through the streets of Mullaloo with orienteers flowing in and out of parks in the area. There is a small section of bushland which the courses will go through and a few small pathways to keep an eye out for. The main attractions, however, are the sandy shoes gained by navigating along the beach and the wonderful views of the ocean.

Prams are allowed: the few controls on the beach will be inaccessible but there are plenty of other controls in the suburb that can be reached. Dogs allowed too.

Courses: Short (2-3km), Medium (4-6km) and Long (7-8km).
Pre-enter via Eventor (entries close at 23:59pm on Friday 22nd January). If you do not have an Eventor account, click on ‘Create Account’ and follow the prompts.
Register on the day at the event is available, primarily for those wanting to enter as a group who cannot enter through Eventor.
Bring: your SI card if you have one, or borrow one at the event. Also bring sunscreen, hat and water bottle.
On the day registration: from 4:15 pm.
Beginner's briefing: 4:45 pm.
Mass start: 5:00 pm, courses close 6:15 pm.
*Event support: LOST
*Includes assisting with event set up, 'meeting and greeting' newcomers when they arrive, providing the pre-event briefing for beginners, helping with registration, and collecting controls and dismantling the event afterwards.

Event Report: MetrO 7, Shelley

After a scorching week the weather cooled down somewhat to allow the Shelley event to go ahead with 72 competitors/groups participating.  The course was set by junior Kate Braid with good feedback from the short course competitors who noted that all first four finishers took different routes for their 7 controls.  Duncan Sullivan was first finisher on the short course, Ken Brownlie second and Ken's grandson Archie Brownlie came third.  First female finisher on the short course was Rosalie McCauley.

For the medium course, winner of the female competition was Marlene Flett, with Liam Dufty easily winning the male competition and coming first overall for the medium course.  Ricky Thackray won the long course and Rachel West was first in the female competition.

As always, many thanks must go to the volunteers who assisted at the event including Ceri Pass and Kate Braid, Rosalie McCauley, Dave Pass, Wendy Hobley, Emma Plummer, Graham Braid, Vanessa Smith, Robert Boekelaar, Jason Simpson, Georgie and Rod Russell, Jenny and John Major, Heike Behrbohm and the Coleman Family.

Results from the event are now available in Eventor, and the series standings have been updated to include these results.
