Join us as we resume our online events on the second Tuesday of each month in 2021. On Tuesday February 9th, tune in for our next seasonal book club.

Arnold Zable — one of the most compassionate and celebrated Jewish writers in Australia — will be interviewed by Tali Lavi on how he sheds a ray of light on the darkest of places in his latest book, The Watermill, a quartet of true stories of displacement, of survival, and of resistance.

We would love to hear from you if you have read the book and have a question for Arnold and Tali — simply register and be there during MJBW’s virtual book club on the night. Or just watch the event and read the book afterwards. The Watermill is available from The Avenue, Readings, and Jeffreys bookstores.

About The Watermill

Arnold Zable takes us to distant lands, ranging from remote provinces in China and Cambodia, to pre- and post-war Yiddish Poland, Kurdish Iraq and Iran, and closer to home, Indigenous and present-day Melbourne, to weave tales of people destined to live extraordinary lives. Many of the stories arise out of trauma, dispossession, persecution and suffering. The wisdom of this masterly storyteller allows a semblance of hope for the universal spirit of humanity.

Arnold Zable is a highly acclaimed novelist, storyteller and human rights advocate. His works include Cafe Scheherazade, Jewels and Ashes, Sea of Many Returns, The Fig Tree, Scraps of Heaven, Violin Lessons and The Fighter, which was shortlisted for both a Victorian and NSW Premier’s Literary Award. His awards include the 2017 Australia Council Fellowship for Literature and the 2013 Voltaire Prize for freedom of expression.

Tali Lavi is a writer and critic (Australian Book Review, The Monthly, Magpies, Sydney Review of Books). She has interviewed writers for Melbourne Jewish Book Week, Melbourne Writers Festival, Adelaide Writers’ Week and Sydney Jewish Writers Festival. Tali has an MA in Creative Writing (RMIT University). She is former Program Co-Manager for Melbourne Jewish Book Week.
