2nd Faculty Meet & Greet Session
Wednesday, January 27th
10.30 am to noon (EST)

Global IDEAS and the Community of Practice on Global Development are pleased to invite you to the 2nd Meet and Greet session which will include short presentations followed by discussion. You can expect to learn about current global development research interests of MSU faculty, identify potential partners for future collaborations, and identify possible funding opportunities.

Dr. Terrie Taylor

University Distinguished Professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and
Director, Blantyre Malaria Project (Malawi)

Dr. Terrie Taylor has been living and working in Malawi for six months each year (January – June, the “malaria season”) since 1986 where she provides clinical care for children with cerebral malaria in the context of observational studies and interventional clinical trials. This has included recognizing malarial retinopathy and establishing its importance, orchestrating the largest single autopsy study of fatal cerebral malaria, and coordinating the introduction of magnetic resonance imaging in Malawi. Dr. Taylor is also Co-Principal Investigator for the Malawi ICEMR (International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research).  The Malawi ICEMR coordinates field-based studies designed to identify barriers to the control of malaria transmission at community level.

                        

Dr. Furqan Irfan

Director of Research Development, College of Osteopathic Medicine
Dr Furqan B. Irfan is one of those very few individuals who have MD, PhD, MBA background. He is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research Development at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has broad ranging experience in research, teaching, academic health system development, population and global health, healthcare startups and Advisory Board. Dr. Irfan is the course director for Evidence-based Medicine course that is delivered to over 300 medical students each year. His research overlaps epidemiology, population and global health, health services and outcomes research, data science/machine learning; and covers a broad spectrum of diseases including heart diseases, stroke, nutrition, and cancer. Dr Irfan is an Advisory Board member of a Silicon Valley Innovation Center of a tech firm; has attracted over half a million dollars in competitive grants; and has 22 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

 
Dr. Susan Wyche

Associate Professor, Department of Media and Information
Dr. Susan Wyche (she/her) is an Associate Professor in MSU's Department of Media and Information and has a courtesy appointment in MSU's African Studies Center. Goals of her research include providing technologists in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) with an understanding of technology use in sub-Saharan Africa that is grounded in people’s experiences. To achieve this goal, she conducts fieldwork in primarily Kenyan sites that she has been visiting since 2008. This research is funded by awards from Google, Facebook, USAID, NIH, and NSF. Wyche is a 2015 recipient of an NSF CAREER Award. Susan earned her PhD in Human-Centered Computing from Georgia Tech (in 2010), an MS from Cornell University and an undergraduate degree in Industrial Design from Carnegie Mellon University.



Dr. Douglas Hartman

Educational Psychology & Educational Technology, and Teacher Education
Dr. Douglas Hartman is Professor of Technology & Human Learning in MSU’s College of Education with a joint appointment in the Departments of Teacher Education, and Educational Psychology & Educational Technology. He serves on faculties in the Languages & Literacies and Educational Technologies programs and received the prestigious Albert J. Kingston Award from the Literacy Research Association for distinguished scholarly service to the field of literacy. Dr. Hartman's research interests focus on technology, learning, literacy and language in global contexts. His global partnerships have been with colleagues in Kazakhstan, Turkey and other Central Asian countries. Funding for his research has been made possible by the Carnegie Corporation of NY, Spencer Foundation, MI Dept of Education, American Councils for International Education, Central Asia University Partnerships Program, National Council of Teachers of English, and International Literacy Assoc.



 

Global IDEAS 

Global Innovations in Development, Engagement, and Scholarship (Global IDEAS) catalyzes interdisciplinary thought, research, and action to solve global/grand challenges in an international development context. We facilitate communities of practice; collaborate and engage with external partners and donors; enhance opportunities for faculty and staff to conduct research, education, and engagement; and provide proposal development and project management to support MSU’s international objectives.
