Hoping for more snow!

We could use some more snow, but conditions at Strathcona were very good on the weekend!

Thanks very much to volunteer Karla Trejo-Oliver who will be sending out the email updates each week, starting this week.  If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, please respond to this email and let Katrina know.

A reminder of the changes we've made due to COVID this year:

  • No organized carpool for ski events
  • No coffee after Wednesday evening skis
  • COVID symptom online form required to be filled out by each skier before ski events - see link below
  • Ski groups must have 10 or less people and must socially distance (outdoor group physical activity is still permitted)

Club Membership
Recreational Ski Group members are strongly encouraged (and required for Sunday skis) to purchase an Edmonton Nordic Ski Club membership for $20 on Zone4. This supports the club and the wonderful grooming and snow making provided by the club. If you are unable to purchase this or want to try out a rec ski event before buying a membership, please let me know as alternative options are available. Membership also gives you 10% off at local ski shops (Fast Trax and Track N Trail)!

COVID symptom check - online form
Before attending any rec ski events, an online symptom checklist will be required to be filled out by all participants. If you have any symptoms listed, then you should not attend the event.
The form is here.

CANSI - Ski instructor training opportunity
If anyone is interested in taking the CANSI I course to become a X-country ski instructor, please reply to this email as there may be a course coming up. Classic and Skate skiing is required.

Canadian Birkie - Callout for Volunteers
The Canadian Birkie is over 4 days this year, with each race event happening separately due to COVID. Many volunteers are needed to make this happen! Most of the positions will be outdoors and precautions will be taken to keep volunteers safe. Please email fellow Rec Ski member Monica (monicawartenberg@gmail.com) to sign up to volunteer or find out more!

Canadian Birkie - Virtual and Main event
The Canadian Birkie opened registration of the first ever Virtual Canadian Birkie as part of this year’s cross country ski events. The main ski event, taking place in Edmonton, still has a few spots available. Or just join the Virtual Canadian Birkie! It offers cross country skiers an opportunity to participate in the Canadian Birkie at their own pace, at their own place.
Participants can sign up to ski, roller-ski, run, walk or cycle one of the Birkie distances: 4, 8, 13, 31 or 55 kilometres. More information can be found at https://canadianbirkie.com/virtual-birkie/
More information about the Most KM Skied Award can be found here: https://canadianbirkie.com/most-km-skied-group-award/

Wednesday Group Ski
We will be skiing at Gold Bar, leaving the Gold Bar lodge (just South of the parking lot, here) at 7PM sharp. We will ski for 1-2 hrs. Join us to check out the trails, see old friends and make new ones. Ensure you fill out the COVID symptom check before the event.

Sunday Ski January 17 - Strathcona Wilderness Center @ 9:30am (subject to change)

  • As we find out more about local conditions closer to the weekend, we may change the location. Let me know if you are interested and I will send out an email update to those I have heard from.
  • ENSC memberships are required for this trip
  • Meet at 9:30am at the Strathcona Wilderness Center outside of the lodge
  • The bathrooms are open at the SWC lodge, however other than that and purchasing trail passes, the lodge is closed so prepare to change and eat in your car or outdoors
  • Please reply to this email if you are interested in the trip so I can any send final trip details. Include your name and phone number
  • Skiers will need to buy a day pass at the lodge (~$7). Season passes are also available
  • We will likely be skiing 8-10 km that day, so bring snacks and extra layers.
  • If the daytime high (without wind chill) is -23C or colder, the trip will be automatically cancelled.

If you have any questions about the group or would be interested in volunteering with the Recreational Ski Group, please email me at ensc.recreationalski@gmail.com.

Thanks everyone!!!
