VALE // David Clark ESM

We were saddened to hear of the passing of a Sorrento SLSC WA Honorary member David Clark ESM on 24 December 2020.

Dave’s involvement in surf lifesaving began in 1971 when at age 39 he joined Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club and quickly became a valued member, holding a number of key positions, before joining Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club WA in 1982 where his involvement continued.

Dave played a significant role in the development of Surf Life Saving’s emergency services operations including the introduction of Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) to WA clubs and was the State IRB Officer from 1975-1991. Dave’s passion for IRBs never wavered, remaining a keen supporter of IRBs as both a rescue and racing craft up until his passing.

Dave was also instrumental in the development and widespread utilisation of radios by SLSWA clubs and members, with more than ten years spent as SLSWA’s Radio & Communications Officer (1991-2003).

Described as “a persistent pioneer and a great advocate for crucial innovation”, in 2012 Dave was awarded the Emergency Service Medal for his long-standing dedication to Western Australia’s rescue services.

Our sincerest condolences go out to Coral, Ken and the Clark family at this difficult time.

Safe WA App

As part of the Western Australian State Government’s mandatory contact registers being introduced at venues from Saturday 5 December 2020, Sorrento SLSC WA still require all members/vistors to check-in via the SafeWA App.

To help keep your fellow members safe we ask that you take the following steps:

  1. Download the SafeWA App from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Create your account.
  3. Check in at Sorrento SLSC WA  by opening your SafeWA App and scanning the QR code.

We have noticed members NOT doing this, swiping your fob card into the club is NOT CHECKING IN. You must still check in with the app or write in the paper form on the form near the doors/changerooms/bar/cafe.

If you do not have a smartphone or are unwilling to use the SafeWA App, you will have the option to provide your details on a paper-based contact register at entry.

Youth

Youth Sleepover

Thank you firstly to all the youth, youth committee and parents that contributed their time to fund raising to make this possible. A special thanks to Marina for the organisation, Amanda, Jo & Matt for sleeping over with the youth, Greg for the movie entertainment and Darren & Anthony for bacon & egg burgers Sunday am! Simon for the support of Domino’s Pizza’s and of course Jess / Amanda for letting us use the clubs facilities. It was great to see 30 of the youth participate. Thank you for being such a great group! We hope that it was fun. Stay tuned for the next youth activity!! Enjoy the rest of the school holidays for those that are still on them. We look forward to catching up next Sunday at the Flag!!

Sunday Session

Despite less than perfect conditions, the Sunday morning session took place.  Well done to those who went into the water.  Many thanks to Paul Berry  for instructing the Youth on use of the Spinal Board and for co-ordinating Spinal Board Team Races for the Youth.  This was a great opportunity for those who were involved to get a taste of what activities they will do as part of the Bronze qualification.

Woodside Nippers

Congratulations to all the Nippers that we're able to get down to the Trigg carnival on Sunday and have a crack in not ideal conditions. The green machine hammered on with some valuable lessons being taught, even to our more accomplished athletes. Everyone that took part should be super proud of themselves.

Thank you to all our Senior Age Managers and their assistants to our parent water safety and all the Nippers and parents that assisted in emptying the board trailer after the carnival. Special. Thanks to Muzz for bringing down the board trailer and  Belly for being a team manager for the day. Thankfully we have found another leader of our club song Jezza Plint! Thanks for filling in great job buddy!

While competing at carnivals is great and we do encourage having a go, it’s definitely not all we are about at Sorrento so I’d like to thank all the assistant age managers that helped run a nippers session back at Sorrento. It really is beneficial to our nippers to have the option.

With conditions being less than ideal at Sorrento on Sunday, our U8 and U9's were meant to run Little Nippers Club Champs number 2. They were able to run the beachside of things but have postponed the water events to another day which is yet to be confirmed.

I thank the Age Managers and parents of these two groups for understanding the bigger picture in running these events. It’s more about participating and having a positive experience than individual results, we are definitely on the right path at Sorrento.

This weekend sees our Little Nippers go to Cottesloe for the first intra club hit out of the season. Good luck and have lots of fun. Parents, please assist your Age Managers by being on time and coming ready as it makes their life easier.

Our U10 through to U13 they have Club Champs number 2. Please remember (parents) these events are about personal growth and there is NO Uncle Toby IRON PERSON Contracts to be handed out at the end of the day.

Encouragement and good sportsmanship is paramount in Junior (all) sport. Let's teach our kids by leading by example we set them. Not that this hasn’t been happening at Sorrento, I just like to give a gentle reminder to the team every now and then.

Have a great week!

See you on the beach!
