Great gain
Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6 - NKJV
The time we are living in is undoubtedly difficult to bear. The regional and national lockdowns - due to the Covid-19 virus - have thrown us into a condition of life we are unaccustomed to and likely uncomfortable with. As a result, we easily succumb to restlessness and dissatisfaction. Against this, we are in need of an antidote. The scripture above provides it!
Godliness with contentment is a condition of soul. In it is found great gain. What divine comfort and encouragement is here! In this time of pandemic, we feel like we’re not gaining much at all. Nevertheless, this promise spoken by the Holy Spirit prevails. It is not about worldly gain, I am sure you will understand. “Gain” to worldly people means increase in material wealth or position. In fact, in the eternal scheme of things such wealth is a minor gain! Instead of minor gain Paul points us to great gain. It is this gain that we see arising in the lives of two children in the Gospels, the lives of John the Baptist and of Jesus. We hear they "became strong in spirit." In addition of Jesus, we hear he grew becoming "filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him." This is great gain! Luk.1:80, Luk.2:40.
We need godliness with contentment in order to have great gain! Jeremiah Burroughs writes, "Contentment in every condition is a great art, a spiritual mystery. It is to be learned, and to be learned as a mystery." The Holy Spirit is the teacher of this mystery. He teaches us the spiritual mystery of contentment whenever we’re quiet before Him and present ourselves teachable. Add to this godliness. Godliness is well-directed reverence towards God - you have to make it evident in the walk and talk of your daily life! Phil.4:11-13, 1Tim.4:7-8.
Guard against dissatisfaction, enter into godliness with contentment!
