Nordic Women in Film – radiant films and fascinating panel discussions

The Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) have a long history of promoting gender equality, spearheading initiatives to support inclusion and highlighting women’s stories. Also on country level, Finland works to build a world where women and girls of all abilities and ages can fully enjoy their rights.

On this theme, the Embassy of Finland invites you to join Nordic Women in Film, during which bold, creative and distinctive female voices are celebrated. The series of Nordic films and fascinating panel discussions with groundbreaking female Nordic and American filmmakers start on February 2. Topics range from how to live and create freely to women defining their own reality. These screenings and events are brought to you in collaboration with the Nordic Embassies in DC, Women in Film and Television International, and Women in Film & Video Washington, DC.

The series will be opened by Finland’s Oscar contender film TOVE and panel discussion on Boundless Art, Boundless Success, and what it means to live and create freely.

Schedule for the opening event:
February 2-3: Screening of Tove (dir. Zaida Bergroth, Finland, 2020)
(**Tove will be available to watch online in the United States for 24 hours starting from February 2, 8 pm EST onwards)

Screening for TOVE is SOLD OUT, but four more movies will become available during February and March. Keep an eye on our social media channels for updates!

February 3, 3:00-4:30 PM (EST): Q&A with filmmakers of TOVE, followed by panel discussion on “Boundless Art, Boundless Success” with speakers such as film directors Zaida Bergroth (Finland), Pamela B. Green (USA) and Isabella Eklöf (Sweden). Q&A and panel discussion will be streamed worldwide.

Bioeconomy
Finland, Maine and Michigan hosted a webinar in December to launch working groups in key sectors of the bioeconomy.

The aim for the working groups is to act as platforms for joint U.S.-Finland research, development and innovation projects. The working groups will be open to companies, education and research organizations, and industry interest groups. In the virtual launch event and webinar, bioeconomy and forestry leaders had an opportunity to showcase their activities and create new networks.

Education
The Embassy of Finland in Washington and the Finlandia Foundation National organized a two-part webinar to discuss the opportunities that Finland offers for study, research and entrepreneurship.

The first part of the webinar, led by Anne-Mari Paster, President of Finlandia Foundation National, and Ilkka Turunen, counselor for science and education, discussed Finland's rapid rise to the forefront of education, science and technology. What are the special features of the Finnish education and research system and what could be learned from Finland's experience?

The second part of Webinar was devoted entirely to questions and answers. In a lively, two-hour discussion, American participants were interested in English-language university degree programs, admission, student permits, tuition fees, scholarships, accommodation and living expenses in Finland.
