How Faith Leaders Are Finding Hope In Dark Times

[NPR] For words of encouragement after a difficult week, NPR's Michel Martin turns to Rev. Dr. Jackie Lewis, Bishop Michael Curry and Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld.

MICHAEL CURRY: Three questions I'm finding helpful in these days of difficulty and hardship for us all. Sometimes it helps to just ask, what hurts? What's wrong? And in this time of pandemic, it's helpful to name where the pain is coming from.

From Many, One

The Episcopal Church is launching a campaign, “From Many, One,” to promote a new spiritual framework for Episcopalians to engage in tough conversations with family, friends and neighbors, bridging the intense divisions that threaten to tear apart communities in the United States and beyond.   Episcopalians will be encouraged to invite others to join them in “conversations across difference” guided by four questions: Who do you love? What have you lost? Where does it hurt? And what do you dream?  Read about the program here on Episcopal News Service. Visit the website and sign up.

Planning for Resilience — Take action with DioCal!

This column is designed to help our congregations, week by week, update their disaster plans and their listings on the Episcopal Asset Map.

If you’ve been following this column over the last several months, you have been evaluating your congregation’s capacity to respond to potential disasters and emergencies. The next step is to plan how this information will be applied to specific types of events. In most cases, the initial response to particular types of disasters will be very similar.

This week’s suggested action: Using Episcopal Relief and Development Disaster Plan materials (found at this link) begin creating templates for responding to four general types of crises:
  • Major disasters with warning;
  • Major disasters with no warning;
  • Local emergencies with warning;
  • Local emergencies with no warning.
Watch this column in the coming weeks for more information on how to fill out the forms.

Tuesdays, January 12, 19 & 26, 2021, 7:00 p.m - 8:30 pm

It can be said that the Season of Epiphany is marked by revelation, by an awakening, and by learning new responses to old beliefs. In this spirit, this special three-week Epiphany Writing Meditation will include a focus on the intersections of justice and race. By leaning into the words of writers and poets of color, as well as to various pieces of scripture, participants will be invited to unpack and respond to their own justice journey through writing by hand, in community.

Join author Cara Meredith for this virtual writing meditation that leans creativity and spirituality through the simple act of writing. All are welcome, no matter where you are in your writing or spiritual life. Cara, an Oakland-based author and member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, is also a conversationalist at intersections of justice, race and privilege. All participants will receive a copy of Cara Meredith's book, "The Color of Life: A Journey towards Love and Racial Justice."

Cost: $45 for all three sessions, Scholarships are available. If you have any questions, contact Amy Cook, amyc@diocal.org

God of dirt, we thank thee for the life and written word of Mary Jane Oliver, a bride married to amazement. We give thee thanks for her prolific writing that has opened our hearts to the whimsy and wonder of thy creation and unveiled the improbable beauty present in all thy works. Give us gentleness and grace to see this world through her eyes that we may believe again in kindness, mischief, and singing, to the glory of thy Name, through Jesus Christ, who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

With Gladness – Answering God’s Call in Our Everyday Lives - Workshop on gentle spiritual practices,

Tuesdays, February 2 and 9, 3:00 -4:00 PM
Looking for a deeply spiritual Lenten program for your congregation? Join this conversation and interactive group model with the Rev. Christopher H. Martin (Rector of St. Paul’s, San Rafael) as he discusses his newest book – With Gladness – Answering God’s Call in Our Everyday Lives.  As the featured Lenten offering from Forward Movement this year, this book introduces gentle spiritual practices that seem the perfect counter to the unrest and uncertainty of these days. Martin has mined scripture, theologians, poets, and fellow faith pilgrims to develop this guide for modern-day disciples seeking to move through their ordinary days with gladness and singleness of heart. On Feb 3, Christopher will introduce his book, explore the practices and invite us into using a practice for a week. On February 9, you’re invited to return to share the results of one or more of those practices.  Modeling a format for small group sharing, Christopher will help you craft a Lenten program using this book in your own congregation. Register here.
