Important changes to Learn at Lunch

Image

In August 2020 we set up what have now become known as our ‘Learn at Lunch’ events. These have proved very popular with many sessions exceeding 100 participants. Historically we have asked all those wanting to join these free events to register their interest but given the increased administration burden involved we have decided to make an important change for 2021 in that you will no longer need to register your interest for each event. This will save you time and going forwards we will simply share zoom codes for all forthcoming events and leave it up to you to decide which events you access. The flyer here provides more details as does the dedicated ‘learn at lunch’ section on our website that you can access here. We are delighted to have two events scheduled for January. Our Blue Monday special on 18 January will feature a guest speaker and is designed to help you get through what researchers tell us is the most depressing day of the year! On 19 January we will be sharing interim data from our 11th annual clinical audit survey. Note down the zoom codes and join us if you can! All sessions start at 12.30.

The CASC survey says….

Image

Once again, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the clinical audit and QI community who have come out in force to support our annual clinical audit survey. Despite the distractions of the pandemic and intense work pressures for many of you, we are proud to say that 187 returns were received (second highest returns for the survey that we started back in 2010). We are currently examining the results and a preliminary finding is that the richness and length of free-text responses is better than ever before! As always, we are clear that this data belongs to the clinical audit community and in due course our full report will share ALL comments and quantitative data. The key date for your diary is 19 January 2021 at 12.30 when we will be dedicating our ‘Learn at Lunch’ event to feeding back the interim results. All the details of how to take part in this event are available here. Trust us, you wouldn’t want to miss it!

Beware of slacktion plans!

Image

Just before Christmas our seventh ‘Learn at Lunch’ session entitled ‘Clinical Audit Bug-bears’ focused on the sticky subject of action plans! This will be the first of many ‘clinical audit bug-bear’ sessions where we look at common issues and ask those taking part to help suggest improvements. We are indebted to the superb Michael Spry for asking us to look at this topic and what rapidly became clear was the fact that we need to dedicate more time to action plans in 2021 (so watch out for a follow-up event!). Michael gave an excellent account of his personal frustrations with action plans (from his viewpoint as both an auditor and patient safety investigator) and this was followed with a short talk by the equally impressive Helen Turner (from Leeds and York Partnership NHSFT). Both presentations stimulated healthy debate with lots of points raised and suggestions made. Our interactive poll: ‘do you feel you have your action management under control’ led to 64% of respondents replying ‘No’! As an output of the event we have created a ‘slacktion plan’ infographic and you can find that along with lots of other feedback and materials from previous Learn at Lunch sessions, here.

Sign up to HCUK’s 21st annual clinical audit conference

Image

Clinical Audit Support Centre have been privileged to work with HCUK to help formulate the programme for what will be the 21st annual national clinical audit conference. Traditionally this event takes place in London, but on 10 March it will be a virtual online event. There is an superb and varied mix of speakers from: Dr Saifuddin speaking about his award-winning audit and QI work through to recent HQIP Award winners from across the country. We have Emma Challans (Executive Director of Culture and Improvement at Sherwood Forest) speaking about career options for clinical audit professionals and Drs Barnes and Ganado will focus on how their audit teams have managed and made positive changes during the pandemic. The ‘Treasure, Polish or Trash’ session will provide an opportunity to debate what currently works in clinical audit and what does not. The event also looks at audit in care homes and hospices – two domains that are rarely given attention at national events. It is sure to be an excellent event and you can find out more details here. You can also claim your discounted £100 place via CASC by quoting HCUK100CASC when you book.

#CAAW20 round-up

Image

It already seems like a long time ago since Clinical Audit Awareness Week, but we are aware that we have not provided any feedback since the event. Although participation in #CAAW20 was inevitably down on previous years, we were very happy with the engagement we received, Indeed, we were surprised how many organisations continued to use our pledge cards and dummies guide. It was fantastic to see so many tweets featuring these. Perhaps the highlight was our #Bakeoff competition. Congratulations again to all the entrants and Leanne Latchem for her inspiring offer (see the photo!). We were also pleased to see so many of you join us for our fun Learn at Lunch event to celebrate #CAAW20. Sadly, #CAAW20 was not all positive for us. You may have seen that our map of HQIP Award winners was (in our opinion) unduly criticised. This simply depicted factual data supplied by HQIP and showcased the finalists in each category. We understand no finalists complained about this and we again repeat that we support the HQIP Awards for #CAAW20 and encourage you to take a moment to read about the winners, here.

Book now for accredited CASC courses

Image

CASC have always offered our accredited training courses via a range of different options and this is particularly useful at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Historically, most of our training courses operated in a classroom environment and we love the opportunity to meet and interact on a one-to-one basis with learners. However, because of the current social distancing rules we are aware that classroom training is now more problematic. Given the current circumstances, we are offering all of our one-day training courses as a virtual package using zoom. Our online training courses are very interactive, interesting and fun. Learners are given a huge range of resources and for each course we provide a follow-up session approximately one month after the initial course to help embed learning. Of course, there are also obvious benefits: learners can participate from home, helping save the planet and travel time. Our popular one-year distance learning course for clinical audit is also available and we are extending this to cover root cause analysis and quality improvement. To find out more, click here.

A festive gift to our Ethiopian friends

Image

If you have read any of our previous e-Newsletters you may be aware that in 2011, the CASC team had the huge privilege of visiting Ethiopia to carry out a series of clinical audit training sessions. The not-for-profit trip was a real eye-opener and since our return we have sponsored a little girl Tenewark (shown). It has been amazing to see her growing up and maturing into a confident young woman! Given that 2020 has been such a tough year for everyone, plus the fact that not all regional networks took us up on our offer of £50 for #CAAW20, we decided to make a further donation to the work carried out by Together We Learn (Ethiopia). As a Christmas gift we paid for 100 families to receive enough soap to last them one month (it seemed appropriate given the pandemic) and we paid for nutritious meals for Kindu Kids Club members for one week. If you are interested in sponsoring children or families in Ethiopia, you can find out more, here.
