Theodore de Bry's Adam & Eve Engraving from India Occidentalis    by Luke Vavra

Please allow us to introduce Luke Vavra, a guest contributor who has shared with Old World Auctions his research on the engravings from Part I of Theodore de Bry’s India Occidentalis. He has divided his research into four separate parts, which we will share with you over the coming months.

Now retired, Luke Vavra founded Cartographic Arts in 1976, selling maps, globes, and scientific instruments related to using and making maps. During his years as a dealer, Luke amassed one of the best collections of early Virginia maps, plans of DC, and charts of the Atlantic Ocean of any US dealers. Luke officially “closed shop” in 2010 and focused on other interests. We are honored to share the work of such a highly-esteemed professional in the map trade.

This first article gives an in-depth review of the engraving of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that serves as the first plate in Part I.
