We frequently get the question, “Do you excavate in the winter?” The answer is a resounding YES!!….and it is actually really interesting what goes into making accommodations for the winter weather!
The preparation for a winter job actually starts the night before.
We have installed block heaters in all of our trucks and excavators that heat the oil at night, so that even on the most frigid of mornings, our equipment will start right up! Our mechanic arrives early in the morning and fires up all of the equipment to warm it and make sure we don’t have any surprises.
Upon arrival at a job site, the crew will make sure that underground utility markings are visible. If necessary, they will call for an emergency 811 to make the utilities marked. If ice is present on the street asphalt, the crew will use a hawk heater, which is a propane tank with a flame, to melt the ice before cutting into the asphalt.
As for the yard, typically it is just the top layer of dirt that is frozen.
Our crews will use a jackhammer that is typically reserved for breaking up concrete, to help break up the frozen soil. Our crews frequently use our larger excavators that offer more power when digging in winter temps. Fortunately we have two E55 excavators, one E35 excavator and two E20 excavators to get the job done quickly and correctly!
Sewer Lines Only repairs any sprinkler lines that were cut during the excavation process and will mark any potential issues. Once a homeowner turns on their sprinkler in the Spring, if necessary, Sewer Lines Only will come back to repair the sprinkler line free of charge.
When patching the concrete and asphalt, Sewer Lines Only keeps a close eye on the temperature.
The asphalt plants will not produce finish material if the temperature is under 40 degrees. Fortunately in CO, we have plenty of warm winter days and when we are blessed with one, our crews are out doing concrete and asphalt patches ALL day!

Being a CO native, I love learning the history of Denver. I thought an article on “digging” was appropriate. Did you know that in November 1858, a man by the name of General William Larimer set aside 320 acres for a cemetery, which is now the site of present-day Cheeseman and Congress Park? When the cemetery became unkept and the land surrounding it was becoming more expensive, the City of Denver purchased the land for $200 and gave the heirs of those buried there 90-days to remove the remains. Chaos ensued….and there are still very confused ghosts that walk around. A very interesting read.
