The Texas Legislature has reconvened, and Texans are buckling up for a legislative session unlike any other in the Lone Star State’s history. The year 2020 brought unique challenges to Texas and America. So far, 2021 is only reinforcing those challenges. Historical and current racism, the pandemic, and attacks on the symbols and institutions of our democracy are a stark reminder of the importance of the Texas Capitol and the work done there.
Who better to meet these challenges than the nonprofit sector? Nonprofits understand that we stand at a precarious moment in our nation’s history and that nonprofits in Austin, our state, and the country can play an important role in fighting hatred, bigotry, and violence. Nonprofits know that advocacy contributes to debate and can build bridges among disparate ideas and voices. Effective advocacy furthers your mission and benefits your clients and your communities.
Nonprofits must speak on behalf of the voiceless, speak truth to power, speak up. Now is not the time to listen to your most timid board member. The Internal Revenue Service allows for lobbying and advocacy, and the times demand it. We must stand for equity. We cannot quietly acquiesce to the ongoing downgrading and disparagement of our most sacred civic and public institutions. We are needed now.
