Welcome to the new monthly newsletter from Nonprofit Austin! Every month will feature thematic curated content based on Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence and will be accompanied by a brief weekly digest that will help keep you abreast of the latest learning opportunities from our Nonprofit Austin.

We are excited to kick off this new direction with a focus on Advocacy for the month of January. Read on!

Advocacy. What exactly does this mean in the context of nonprofit service? On one hand, influencing public decision-making is a critical and legal means for nonprofit organizations to accomplish their missions. To the highest extent possible, nonprofit organizations should educate their community, provide opportunities to deliberate on public policies, engage their constituents in advocacy activities, and promote community interests. This means open communication between policymakers and constituents must exist in order to contribute to well-informed policies and their effective implementation.

On the other hand, because participation in government decision-making is a highly regulated and sometimes contentious area, this means nonprofit leaders need to be familiar with the regulations and requirements for nonprofit organizations to participate in policymaking. Nonprofits also need to know the reporting requirements and restrictions on partisan political campaign activity. Read more about these requirements and how to implement more Civic Engagement and Public Policy within your organization!

The Texas Legislature has reconvened, and Texans are buckling up for a legislative session unlike any other in the Lone Star State’s history. The year 2020 brought unique challenges to Texas and America. So far, 2021 is only reinforcing those challenges. Historical and current racism, the pandemic, and attacks on the symbols and institutions of our democracy are a stark reminder of the importance of the Texas Capitol and the work done there.

Who better to meet these challenges than the nonprofit sector? Nonprofits understand that we stand at a precarious moment in our nation’s history and that nonprofits in Austin, our state, and the country can play an important role in fighting hatred, bigotry, and violence. Nonprofits know that advocacy contributes to debate and can build bridges among disparate ideas and voices. Effective advocacy furthers your mission and benefits your clients and your communities.

Nonprofits must speak on behalf of the voiceless, speak truth to power, speak up.  Now is not the time to listen to your most timid board member.  The Internal Revenue Service allows for lobbying and advocacy, and the times demand it. We must stand for equity. We cannot quietly acquiesce to the ongoing downgrading and disparagement of our most sacred civic and public institutions.  We are needed now.
