As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we recommit to fighting for his dream.
Here's an update on some key issues impacting Local 99 members and our fight for justice and equity for all.
Education Workers Next in Line for COVID-19 Vaccine
According to California's vaccine distribution plan education workers, including classified school employees and child care providers are next in line to receive the vaccine. The locations, timeline and notification plan for when members can begin receiving the vaccine is not finalized yet and will be set by each county. Check out these Frequently Asked Questions about the vaccine and stay tuned for more information about the rollout plans.
Gov. Newsom’s state budget proposal provides some relief for schools and child care, but it doesn’t go far enough
On January 8, Governor Newsom presented his budget proposal for 2021. The good news is that it includes several proposals to address the uneven nature of COVID-19 recovery, but it falls short of truly addressing the inequitable system that led to Black and Brown communities being disproportionately hit by the pandemic in the first place. Read more about how the budget proposal impacts Local 99 members.
Safe Schools for All Plan to reopen schools for
in-person instruction leaves out our communities
On December 30, the Governor presented his $2 billion "Safe Schools for All" plan to encourage school districts to begin moving transitional kindergarten - 6th grade students toward in-person instruction as early as February. We agree that in-person instruction is best for students. However, the Governor’s plan calls for reopening schools based on low rates of infection. It does not take into account that the highest rates of infection continue to be in low-income communities of color. This will result in more affluent school districts re-opening first, while communities of color are left behind. We say: No Way! Read more.
On January 6, our nation's Capitol and all it represents was trampled, smashed, vandalized and otherwise desecrated by violent militants in an attack on our country.  While many—from the corporations and politicians who support him to the rioters who stormed the Capitol— enabled the horrors of January 6th, no one bears more blame than Donald Trump himself. If he is not held accountable, we leave the door open to others who might seek to follow in his footsteps and endanger our democracy. The House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump on January 13. Now the Senate must do their duty to protect the American people by convicting him.
Add your name here to tell your Senators: Trump must be convicted.
