Forced Disappearances & Prison Abolition

This week Accent of Women looked at the global presence of abduction and enforced disappearance.

Rather than being the exemption, torture and enforced disappearances have been a structural problem of state punishment and repression.

This strategy has been frequently used in places like Argentina, China, Egypt, Kashmir, and Turkey, which this episode looks at with Mahavish Ahmad and Ather Zia.

Small Business; Big Marketing

This week Small Business Banter hosted Tim Reid, the host of the award winning 'Small Business Big Marketing' podcast.

Tim provides practical tips and talks about three limiting beliefs when it comes to marketing a small business.

Do we just setup social media pages? Or could that be a shot in the foot?

There's a 'helpful marketing' approach Tim explains - a way to manage and improve a small business' public profile.

Underway on It's Time

From Jan to April 2021, It's Time is counting down the Top 200 Charting Singles of the 1970s in Australia.

David Kent, the compiler of the Kent Music Report (the official national Aussie charts during the '70s), never calculated one - so this is a first!

It's for those who are nostalgic, and for those who were yet to even be born!

Over 17 episodes, each 59.50 mins long, the countdown will fear a unique outro music bed for the placement of station sponsorships and promos. See the full episode list here.

That's What I Call Science!

Our Q&A with the team

Starting in 2018, Edge Radio's That's What I Call Science took out the 2019 CBAA Community Radio Award for Best New Radio Program, and has subsequently gone national on the Community Radio Network.

Covering all things science, medicine, biology and more, the show sets itself apart from a lot the science communication we see in the mainstream.

For one, it comes from Tasmania - the island state that's also a natural laboratory for researchers. Secondly, it's presented by an all-women team of researchers!

We asked the Niamh Chapman from the show how it all got underway, what the underlying philosophy is, and what science communication meant in 2020.
What’s your sense of the importance of communicating science to the public now?

I feel like society is increasingly polarised so while communicating science in an engaging and inclusive way is more critical than ever, I wonder what should we be doing differently?

I’m not a big fan of scientists lecturing people or creating science events and content that only engages other scientists. I think the most pressing matter is to find a way to provide accurate information that cuts through the noise.

The Community Radio Network (CRN) provides a 24-hour satellite-delivered live stream of programs, including the National Radio News, to community stations across Australia.

The Digital Delivery Network (DDN) is an enhancement that allows stations to order content online, for automatic delivery to a server connected to their satellite receiver. Programs can then be replayed at the time of the local station's choice.
