Are Schools Sacrificing Students' Privacy in the Name of Safety?
The school surveillance industry is booming. While rare, tragedies like school shootings get lots of media attention, and taken together with more common problems like bullying, self-harm, and suicide, these issues raise important questions about students' safety. Add pandemic-related concerns on top of this, and schools and districts are investing in a wide range of student surveillance measures, both on campus and online. K-12 Class Sizes Have Ballooned With Online Learning. It’s Not a Good Thing.
When leaders at Megan Claffey’s Colorado district decided to give parents a choice between online and hybrid learning, they didn’t expect many to choose the all-online option. But instead of the 100 or so families they had planned for, more than 2,800 opted to keep their kids home full time. Is it Time to Kill Calculus?
Many parents relish reliving moments from our childhoods through our children, and doing homework with them is its own kind of madeleine. For Steve Levitt of "Freakonomics" fame — who is, in his own words, "someone who uses a lot of math in my everyday life" — a trip down memory lane vis-a-vis math homework became a moment of frustrated incredulity rather than gauzy reverie. "Perhaps the single most important development over the last 50 years has been the rise of data and computers, and yet the curriculum my children were learning seemed to have been air-dropped directly from my own childhood," he told me. "I couldn't see anything different about what they were learning than what I learned, even though the world had transformed completely. And that didn't make sense."
