Join Rabbi Satz as he teaches at the Temple Ner Tamid Shabbaton, Saturday late afternoon, February 13, 2021.  He is teaching on one of his favorite subjects, Mussar.
The holiday of Purim is marked by a number of unique rituals and traditions. We dress up in costumes, share a festive meal, and listen to the Megillah in the synagogue. All of these practices help us commemorate how the Jewish people were miraculously saved from near-total annihilation. Of course, this year we have to re-imagine how we celebrate, thus this year's (Virtual yet oh so real)  TBO Purim Carnivale, filled with fun for all ages; a puppet show, crafts, a Purim Spiel and more!

Another aspect of the holiday is the obligation to give two gifts expressing kindness to others. The first is Matanot L'evyonim or gifts to the poor. The second is Mishloach Manot or the "sending of portions."  Mishloach Manot, or Shalach Manos, are gifts of food etc. given to family, friends and community members.  This year, TBO is organizing the sharing of Purim baskets to everyone in the TBO kehillah, community.  Let's think of our Purim Baskets as "hugs" to friends who we have been separated from for much too long.

The week before Purim we will prepare hundreds of baskets to go to Temple families.  We need a large team of volunteers willing to deliver them.  Each volunteer will take an average of 10 and we will set up delivery routes by neighborhoods, zip codes, towns so that the routes are geographically grouped.  Baskets will be available to be picked up at Temple on February 16 for delivery prior to Purim on February 25.

We are reaching out to Temple members to help with safe and contactless delivery.  Volunteers should send an email to barkin.carol@gmail.com if they want to participate in the fun.
Watch for the order forms for sending baskets, coming soon!

With many thanks,
Carol Barkin

Take exciting new steps on your journey of Jewish learning

Our Melton Classes are in full swing!!!

Rabbi's class “Social Justice: The Heart of Judaism” is getting rave reviews, but is now closed to new registrations.  We might, however, be able to squeeze you into the other Melton Class, being taught by Rabbi, Cantor, and David Iskovitz “Foundations of Jewish Family Living."  This course provides parents of all ages a small group opportunity to delve deeply into Jewish values and to learn how to share these values with their children of all ages. Appropriate for families where one or both parents are Jewish. Generously supported by the endowment of the Joel and Helen Jacobs Religious School.  “A warm space to reflect on and develop Jewish beliefs, morals, and practices and to bring those to my personal and parenting life.” – TBO member

Feeling bereft because there is no January Jewish Book Council?  Start reading Mothers and Murderers- A True Story of Love, Lies, Obsession...and Second Chances to prepare for our next author, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Katherine Ellison.  She will meet with us on Tuesday, February 16th.  Her book is a psychological thriller and memoir which one review calls a "wild tragicomic ride"!

We dropped off 100 breakfast bags last week at nourish.NJ to support their mission of reducing hunger and food insecurity in our community. Todah Rabah / Thank You to our volunteers who purchased, prepared, and donated the breakfast bags this month!
Want to help? Join us on the first Wednesday of every month! Message us on Facebook or contact the TBO office to get connected to this project. Or, if you would like to volunteer for nourish.NJ with TBO, please contact Nadine Milberg.

Other Temple-Wide Information

You can help the Temple while you shop online. Simply shop at smile.amazon.com/ch/22-6077572 or with AmazonSmile "ON" in the Amazon Shopping app settings, designate Temple B'nai Or as the group you are proud to support,  and AmazonSmile donates to Temple B'nai Or.

Coping with quarantine restrictions and also taking care of your basic needs and your families is a challenge in itself during this pandemic.  Many families, regardless of their feelings about Amazon, are relying on their home delivery services, as shopping is so limited and often unsafe for many of us.  Every time you order from AmazonSmile (same thing as Amazon but through their philanthropic site), they will donate a portion of your order to TBO. There is no additional cost to you.  However, if we all sign up, it will add up to a nice pooled donation from all of us to our Temple. Simply remember to designate TBO as your charity of choice! Log into smile.amazon.com and select "Temple B'nai Or of Morristown."  Thank you, and stay healthy and safe!
