These must be returned to Hon Secretary, Jane Jones, by 28 February.
Dear Member

Welcome to our February Newsletter which includes information about our Annual General Meeting to be held online via Zoom on Saturday 6 March also our online talks being held this month and a plea for volunteers to come forward to help with the Society administration.

We have noticed an increase in the popularity of the online Zoom sessions since Christmas and in fact the talk on 2 February is SOLD OUT with a Waiting List in place.  You can book ahead for these talks so if you see a topic that interests you register for a ticket on Eventbrite straight away.  A complete list of the talks until the end of July is included in the March journal.

The journal is currently with the Printers but should be with you by the middle of February - see image below - and will be uploaded to the website shortly www.glamfhs.org.uk/journal-archive.

You will see in the Journal a plea for volunteers to come forward to join the Executive Committee as the Society Officers are now only able to serve for a maximum of five years without a break.  New Executive Committee members can be co-opted in order to shadow Society Officers before taking over their roles.

We are still without a Society Treasurer.  If we do not manage to fill this vacancy after this year's AGM then we will also need someone to take over the development of the Website as overseeing the Treasurer's role will take priority.   Website development can be done by a team of volunteers so if anyone is interested in this please contact website@glamfhs.org.uk.

Job descriptions for the volunteer roles where we have vacancies are shown on our website.  Some of these essential roles are currently being done by Society Officers and Committee Members additional to their primary roles.  Other areas of the Society's development has had to be delayed or cancelled due to a lack of volunteers.  We have currently suspended our Members Interests as there is no one available to update the out of date information on the website.   We intend to change the way this is administered to allow members to upload their own interests and so remove one administrative task but as yet no-one has volunteered to take on this task.

We are offering more resources and events for our members than ever before but we can only continue to do so if we have volunteers coming forward to assist with the administration.  If you can help please get in touch.

Vice Chairman
on behalf of Executive Committee

CIVIL REGISTRATION & PROBATE RECORDS

General Register Office (Birth & Death) Indexes

The covering dates for the General Register Office Indexes for ordering pdf copies have been extended.

Births 1837-1934 and 1984-2019   These are particularly useful as they include mother's maiden name.

Deaths: 1837-1957 and 1984-2019.  These contain age at death.

There is no facility for ordering pdf marriage certificates.

To search the indexes you will need to set up an account.  General Register Office
pdf Birth and Death certificates currently cost £7 as opposed to £11 for a full certificate.

Wills 1858+

Including Soldiers Wills.  These can be ordered direct and cost £1.50 each
A bargain!

Find a Will  (Probate Search)  www.gov.uk

There are three sections:
  • 1858-1996
  • 1996-to present
  • Soldier's Wills
Hint 1 - it is not worth ordering an Administration where there is no Will as there will not be any further information included in the Will than that given in the probate summary.
Hint 2 -  Searching is easier if you find out the date of death especially if you have a common surname.  Probate usually, but not always, takes place within a year or so of the death.
Hint 3 - Soldiers Wills - a soldier may have two Wills - check both the Soldier's Wills database and the other database.

Wills are great for identifying siblings and married names especially where you are researching a common surname.   The disappointing ones are those that say - I leave everything to my wife.............  It is not only the rich that left wills - some are for very small amounts.

Have fun!

OVERSEAS GROUPS
Would any of our overseas or non-local members like to host a Zoom session concentrating on resources in your area eg Australia, Canada, USA, New Zealand, South Africa etc or even a particular area or state where Welsh people have migrated? Our current journal was co-edited by London Welsh members and is full of local resources of interest to our members.

The session does not need to be a full 'talk' or presentation although, if you know of a speaker who could provide such that would be excellent.  It could just be an informal discussion with a few members from that area or just a short talk on how you used the local resources in your area.

Sessions times would be timetabled to the appropriate time zone.  If you are interested get in touch - cardiffandvale@glamfhs.org.uk

MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTION RENEWAL
STANDING ORDERS

Standing orders are paid at the beginning of January each year.  If this applies to you please check that your Standing Order has been updated to the current annual subscription rate of £15 for UK and £20 for overseas membership.
Incorrect amounts means additional work for our membership team in chasing and processing payments.  If there is a shortfall it also means that your membership will lapse part way through the membership year.
Your expiry date is shown on the website when you log in under Membership Status and also on your journal envelope.
Once membership lapses we remove personal details from our database, mailing list and website so access to the online resources will also cease at this date.   Once you lapse membership online cannot be 'renewed'.   A new account will need to be set up.
If you need further information about your subscription please contact membership@glamfhs.org.uk.
If you are receiving this Newsletter you are currently a fully paid up member but if you do not wish to receive further newsletters click 'unsubscribe' at the bottom of the email.
