Last week, Russ Muse shared a transitional message as we remember lessons from the book of James leading into a more in-depth study of the Lord's Prayer planned for the month of January.  He shared a theme for the year of Listen, Abide, and Pray Big Prayers.  Here are some other points he shared:
  • We need God to put Himself on display. Lord, show us Your glory.
  • Sometimes, in prayer, we "advise" God of what we want. A more meaningful way to pray is to listen, and pray about what God lays on our hearts. Praying this way will lead us to see Him working 100% of the time.
  • Listening is a major dimension of a vital prayer life, as well as our relationships with our brothers/sisters in Chris. It is often better to ask questions rather than give advice.
  • If you feel like you have trouble hearing from the Lord, start with His word.
  • We want to have a year of praying big prayers, based on
    • What God wants
    • What God instructs
    • Not our own agenda

What's Next?  The Lord's Prayer

This Sunday, Russ Muse will begin our series on the Lord's prayer.  We will continue to provide summary notes each week, in addition to the following study tools:

Passage Links
Reviewing: John 5:19
Preparing:  Luke 11:1-2

Manuscript Version: We are happy to provide a manuscript version of each week's passage to assist you in further study.  If you have taken the Reading Scripture class through The River, you will be familiar with making notes and marking the Scriptures in a meaningful way on a printed version of Scripture. Each week we add the latest passage to the document, building as the series goes on, to make this easier for you. Click here to print your manuscript version.

Homework:  Please read Job 38-41 slowly.

Sermon Review Question: (Questions are also posted on our private church Facebook group for those who would like to interact there during the week. Not on Facebook? Feel free to reply to let us know your thoughts!)

How do you tend to think about prayer most?
  • As an opportunity to tell God your requests
  • An opportunity to listen and pray about the requests He puts on my heart
  • A combination of both?
21 Days of Prayer through January 23, 2021

We encourage you to fast and pray in this season the way God leads you. Some fast from food completely, others temporarily suspend social media, coffee, sugar, or some other routine habit/activity in order to focus that energy on prayer. The church will be open for quiet prayer on Wednesdays, January 13 and 20 from noon to 1.
