Getting Ready for Spring Semester

Start by Checking In with Yourself

When a new year and semester begin, many of us experience a range of emotions about the days ahead. This experience may be magnified this year after all that we experienced during 2020. Emotions may include excitement and even relief to get back into a more reliable routine; however, some of us can experience levels of anxiety, dread and even sadness as we think about the semester that lies ahead.

The Carolina community supports each other. Remember that students can access CAPS 24/7 by phone at 919-966-3658 or take a confidential online mental health screening to consider your needs.

No matter how you’re engaging with Carolina this spring, we are all Tar Heels. Our individual acts affect our collective community. Take care of you; take care of each other.

Services Available this week

January 4th - January 10th

COVID Testing on Campus

Students without symptoms and without potential exposure

Free screening is available without appointments at the Carolina Union:
Jan 4 - 10 (Monday thru Sunday) 11 am - 5 pm
In the
Union Gallery - The Gift Plaza side of the union near the Great Hall.
Testing is saliva-based so don't eat or drink 30 minutes prior to test.

Students with symptoms or concern about a potential exposure

This includes students who attended an indoor gathering of people from outside their household, those who interacted with someone who has recently tested positive for COVID, or those who are exhibiting symptoms of illness.

Testing is available at Campus Health by appointment during open hours (Monday - Friday 8 am - 5 pm).
COVID testing at Campus Health is nasal swab based and billed to insurance, and is typically covered by insurance for those with symptoms or potential exposure.

Students who are not yet in the Chapelboro area

Visit the US Department of Health and Human Services website to find testing locations in your state.

Student Health and Wellbeing Services

⚕️Campus Health is open for in-person and telehealth visits M-F 8am - 5pm. Scheduling an appointment is the most efficient way to be seen - call 919-966-2281 or visit healthyheels.unc.edu to request an appointment online.

  • COVID visits are in a separate area of the building and use the former Pharmacy/Physical Therapy entrance closest to Genome Sciences. All other in-person visits can enter at the main doors. This allows for a separation between patients with potential COVID exposure and those without COVID exposure.

  • Campus Health Pharmacy will provide curbside delivery of prescription and over-the-counter items.

🧠CAPS is open for teletherapy services. Initial screenings offered by phone 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm M-F at 919-966-3658. Follow up appointment by Zoom. Group therapy for spring will include several new groups. 24/7 crisis support available by calling the main CAPS phone number at 919-966-3658.

🔗Student Wellness will continue to provide virtual support appointments and wellbeing interventions. Learn more at studentwellness.unc.edu.

🏋️Campus Rec indoor facilities and staff-supported activities are closed through January 10th.

To-do items for UNC Undergrads before returning to the area

Update your Connect Carolina information, including

  • Your local address, where you will reside during Spring Semester 2021

  • Your cell phone number or another reliable contact number if you do not own a cell phone

  • Acknowledge the COVID Community Standards, which include wearing a mask, physical distancing, complying with gathering limits, monitoring your health, and complying with testing, tracing and quarantine/isolation requirements.

Limit interactions and travel for the 14 days before returning to the area. Always practice the 3Ws (Wait 6 feet apart, wear a mask, wash your hands).

Prove you do not have COVID by doing one of the following:

  • Upload negative antigen or PCR test from the 5 days before you return to the area to Connect Carolina. Antigen tests use a nasal or throat swab. PC use nasal or throat swab, or sometimes, saliva.

    • Get tested, receive the results and upload the results within the 5 day window of days prior to your arrival in the area.

    • IF YOUR TEST RESULT IS POSITIVE, upload the result, isolate and DO NOT RETURN TO CAMPUS. Campus Health will be in touch with a return to campus date.

    • International test results will be accepted but need to be translated to English before uploading. Limit non-essential activities after arrival in the US for 14 days before classes start.

  • If you’ve tested positive between 10/1/2020 and 1/1/2020, provide proof of that test prior to arrival to campus via Connect Carolina.

Set up the HallPass web application by signing in online.

When you arrive to campus, obtain re-entry testing from one of the Carolina Together Testing Centers, which are scheduled to open 1/11/2021.

  • Limit interactions and quarantine in your living area in the community as much as possible while awaiting test results.

  • HallPass will notify you when results are available (typically within 8 hours). If the result is positive, Campus Health will contact you.
