Newsletter January 2021

Dear all,

Happy new year and warmest wishes for a healthy, happy, and hopefully slightly more normal 2021! We hope you have had a good and restful winter break.

In this newsletter, we'd particularly like to draw your attention to our upcoming Wikipedia edit-a-thon on January 27: please find the registration link below.

Fun fact about 2020: during the year, four new matches between mentors and mentees were established within the EWM-NL mentoring program. In addition, a number of new mentors were added to the network - thank you and welcome!

It is still possible to enroll for the mentoring program. Do not hesitate to do so, either by signing up via our website or by sending an email to mentor@ewmnetherlands.nl. You can also reach us by email if you have any questions about the program. We have mentors from both academia and industry, and the meetings with your mentor can cover a wide range of topics. New subscriptions of mentors are also always welcome and much appreciated!

All the best,
Valentijn Karemaker, on behalf of the EWM-NL board

Wikipedia project launch event 27 January 2021 - register now!
EWM-NL has started a Wikipedia project. The goal is to contribute pages to Wikipedia about (Dutch) female mathematicians. Contributing could take the form of writing, expanding, or translating a page.

On Wednesday January 27, 2021 we will launch the project with a kick-off event. This online Wikipedia edit-a-thon will last from 14.30 till 17.00. The event will consist of two parts: we will start with a short training session by Wikimedia volunteer Ellywa, meant as an introduction to Wikipedia editing. This will be followed by a writing session. You can register for both parts or only one.

If you register to the writing session, you will be asked if you have preferences for (Dutch female) mathematicians to write/edit/translate a page for. The suggestions we give are based on the brainstorming session held at our online annual event, but please feel free to make other suggestions as well.
While you can certainly tick multiple boxes, please bear in mind that we are aiming to create teams of participants to work together on these pages.

Nearer the event, we will send you the necessary details to join the meeting. In any case, we encourage you to create an account on Wikpedia. If you have time, you could even already practice a bit beforehand!

WICS and YWOG Wikipedia edit-a-thon 26 January 2021
Coincidentally, the Women in Information and Computing Sciences (WICS) and Young Women of Geoscience (YWOG) are also hosting a Wikipedia edit-a-thon, just a day before EWM-NL. We gladly copy their announcement below:

Women in Information and Computing Sciences (WICS) and Young Women of Geoscience (YWOG) will be starting off the new academic year with an exciting workshop to help increase the visibility of female scientists on Wikipedia!

This “Wikipedia Edit-a-thon” will take place on January 26th between 1-5 pm.

The idea of this Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is to work together on editing, or creating, Wikipedia pages for female scientists, since (unfortunately) they are underrepresented on this platform. Also, only 15-20% of Wikipedia editors identify as female or non-binary. Together we can change this and help build a more equal and inclusive encyclopaedia!

During this workshop, you will not only learn the basics of Wikipedia edits, but you will help improve the visibility of female scientists (maybe someone you know or value for their work)! No prior experience with Wikipedia editing is required to join the workshop. To make sure we’re all on the same level, we will start the workshop with an introduction and Wikipedia editing training session. We will then work on our own edits, with possibilities to check in with each other and ask questions through the chat. After our wrap-up and experience sharing, we will end with a virtual borrel.

You can already now sign up to the event through the form below. After signing up, you will be added to our Teams environment which we will use as our platform for the event.

Things you need to do in order to fill out the form:

  • Create your own Wikipedia account (this is needed for editing). We recommend using a pseudonym, i.e. a username other than your own/usual, as its always safer (and fun) to have another identity!
  • Think of 3 female scientists you would like to create/edit a Wikipedia page for. This could for instance be an existing page that has lacking/wrong information, a completely missing page, or an existing page that is not yet available in your native language.

We’re looking forward to editing together with you!

Women in Numbers Europe - 4: first announcement
This is the first announcement for the upcoming Women in Numbers - Europe (WIN-E) workshop. After Luminy, Leiden, and Rennes, this fourth edition will take place in Utrecht, The Netherlands, from August 29th to September 2nd, 2022. Registration will open in Spring 2021.

WIN-E workshops are collaborative events, during which the participants work together on research projects in number theory, each project being led by a designated leader and co-leader.

During the registration process, applicants will be asked which groups they are interested in joining. Women mathematicians ranging from PhD students to senior researchers and working in any European country are warmly invited to apply.

More information, including the list of projects and project leaders, can be found on our website: https://women-in-numbers-europe-4.sites.uu.nl/

Please save the date, and do not hesitate to forward this message to anyone you think might be interested!
Also, feel free to contact us at wine4@u-picardie.fr with any questions.

NMC 2021
We pass on the following message from the NMC organisers:

Last March we had to cancel the Dutch Mathematical Congress (NMC 2021) due to Corona; a hard decision, but the proper one, since one week later we had the "intelligent lockdown".  Since we don't know if we can organize NMC 2021 (partly) on location, we made a programme which can be done online. Online is much more demanding and therefore we split the programme up. In this newsletter we proudly present the NMC Series 2021!

The NMC Series 2021 consists of:

28 January 2021, 16:00-17:00h: Stieltjes Prize award ceremony and NWO Impact Prize Award Ceremony (online)

11 March 2021, 16:00-18:00h: Speed dates with Industry (online)

6 & 7 April 2021, 9:00-17:30h: Two days with keynote lectures and parallel sessions  (online, if possible hybrid: online and at Van Der Valk Hotel Utrecht)

20 May 2021: KWG PhD prize (online or on location)

24 September 2021: Onderwijs meets Onderzoek

We are still planning two other events in the series: a What's cooking session with updates from the Platform Wiskunde Nederland (PWN), the PWN Committee Research, European Women in Mathematics, and the "Docentendag".

More information will follow soon on the website https://mathematischcongres.nl/, but for now: Save the dates and we hope to meet you during the NMC Series 2021 online or in person!

NWO "Stairway to Impact" prize for Katerina Stankova

The new NWO Science Domain awards recognize inspirational scientists in five categories, among which societal impact. Stankova receives the €50.000 cash prize for her contributions to mathematics-based cancer therapies.

Stankova is particularly effective at setting up the interdisciplinary collaborations needed to get her mathematical models to the clinic. These dynamic game theory models suggest that certain cancer patients can benefit from a rigorously different approach to treatment: applying smaller doses of drugs less frequently could extend their lives and improve their life quality. Although clinical trials are still ongoing, preliminary data suggests that these predictions are indeed true.

Congratulations to Dr. Stankova!

Tmrrw initiative (in Dutch)

The Tmrrw initiative (https://tmrrw.nl) presents a career and study orientation app for young people.
They published the following news statement and call for videos:

Stieltjes prize awarded to Bente Bakker

On Tuesday 15 December 2020 the jury of the Stieltjes prize got together to award this prize for the best mathematical PhD thesis that appeared in the academic year 2019-2020.

Altogether 76 theses have been assessed. After two rounds the jury had to choose between four exceptional theses. In the end the jury decided to award this year's Stieltjes prize to Bente Bakker. Bente Bakker graduated at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam under supervision of Jan-Bouwe van der Berg and Rob van der Vorst, on a thesis with the title "Nonlinear waves in local and nonlocal media. A topological approach".

Congratulations to Dr. Bakker!

Vierkant voor Wiskunde books (in Dutch)

The organisation Vierkant voor Wiskunde has published two books: one about mathematics in every-day life, and one about epidemiology. The books cost €12,95 and can be ordered via the webshop of the organisation: www.vierkantwinkel.nl.
They published the following news item:

Wiskunde vind je overal. Het nut van wiskunde in de gewone wereld is echter lang niet altijd duidelijk. Wegen aanleggen, pakketten bezorgen, ziekenhuisoperaties inplannen, internationale vluchtroutes uitzetten: dit is allemaal onmogelijk zonder wiskunde. Of in elk geval hoogst inefficiënt.
