Hi there,

I sat down on January 5th to write the January newsletter, and the next day, before I could finish it and send it out, our neighbour to the south had some pretty serious political unrest. My focus shifted and all of the things I had written the day before seemed irrelevant. So here I am, nearly a month later, finally sending out my first newsletter of the year. (If you are curious what I might have said last month, I turned it into a blog post that you can read here.)

It's Sunday morning, the bread is rising, and my thoughts are with all of you. It's been a long year, and things continue to be challenging in ways we haven't experienced before. I know that I am feeling the strain of long periods of being unable to be with friends and family.
The protests of the summer over racial injustice are over, but not much has changed for our BIPOC friends. One of my Ontario-based kids and I are starting our Parent/Child bookclub, reading together My Grandmother's Hands by Resmaa Menakem — a way to connect with my family, and a way to continue the conversation about racism during Black History Month (February) [link is to Amazon.com, but please support your local bookseller when you're able].
We sent birthday greetings yesterday to a friend via VidHug. Staying connected is hard. Here's Declan and me, no fancy hair, makeup or wardrobe.
What are you doing to present? How are you caring for yourself? And what things are you not doing — both in ways that are helpful as well as the things that you think you "should" be doing? I know I'm not moving my body as much as I used to. We're in Red (our COVID-19 restrictions are on a colour scale) here in Moncton, and it's cold outside. I had begun taking Gumdo classes, but that's on hold now until we're back in Orange. I'm being gentle with myself and trying to be less judgmental on days when I find it hard to "exercise", trying to do some small or gentle movements: shaking, moving my toes, fingers, and eyes, standing on my wobble disc (my favourite prop!) to activate some balancing. I've made a new COVID-19 Spotify playlist, full of the tunes we're listening to these days. Nothing better these days than moving to a kitchen dance party.

My Sunday morning baking is special, quiet time for me, and provides us with sourdough bread for the week, and often a few other yummy treats.

Something that I find helpful is being creative. We think of creativity in doing things like painting, drawing, singing, knitting (baby things knit up quickly! — no I'm NOT pregnant 😂), sewing, writing, the things we generally consider creative arts. I've been finding a lot of joy and pleasure in the crafting of ideas.
I've finished creating the online group Buteyko course which begins February 8. The creativity of designing a course also connects me to a bigger purpose. This first group course filled up fast, and so I've opened up registration for a group beginning March 10, with the group sessions at 9am ET. I'm also creating new content for the upcoming 300h YTT I'm teaching in this spring, and I'm working on a new webinar collaboration with a friend of mine — stay tuned for details in the coming months.

In the meantime, coming up on Thursday, February 11 at noon ET I will be hosting the Introduction to Yogic Breathing webinar. Registration is open. This will be in a Zoom meeting format, so there will be lots of opportunity for interaction and questions. The recording will be available to watch later if you are not able to be there live, and there are additional readings and other resources included to help you keep learning. If you are interested but have not done any previous courses on the science of breath, please watch the webinar, An Introduction to the Science of Breath, which is available to be seen on demand now.

This was a little rambling, but that's where I am today. Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far. I hope that you're doing okay.
With warmest wishes for 2021,
Jennifer
