Dear Paprika! community,
Happy New Year!
As 2021 arrives, we are reconsidering ways Paprika! can address ongoing unpredictability. We are no longer just thinking reactively but also looking to a future that requires even more endurance and patience. Amidst a long pandemic and a hybrid learning environment, we would like to mirror the slowness we have been experiencing in the way that we work, offering more time for issue editors, contributors, and readers to think, respond, and write, in contrast with the typically fast-paced nature of Paprika!.
This semester, we are slowing down by providing more time between fewer issues, and more opportunities for dialogue between issues. To remain responsive and reflective, we are also introducing interruptions to our issue series in the form of dispatches—thematically ambiguous collections of texts, images, and more that will respond to, analyze, critique, or further develop past Paprika! content and/or current events.
Our hope is that this format will help us to work towards intentionality and action in the conversations we have as we address ongoing issues within the school and the wider contexts of a profession, an academy, and a planet. We envision the Spring 2021 installment of Paprika! as a call to reflect, respond, and invent with empathy, criticality, retrospection, and imagination—to consider how we can use Paprika! to facilitate a rethinking of design practice, education, and what it means to be at YSoA.
