MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a body of young people (13-25) from Washoe County striving to vocalize the needs of foster youth by serving as ambassadors to the Washoe County Human Services Agency and State of Nevada. AND, the purpose of YAB is TO ALLOW FOSTER YOUTH TO VOICE CONCERNS AND MAKE CHANGES IN THE LAWS, AS WELL AS BUILD EVERLASTING RELATIONSHIPS.
This is the WCYAB Monthly Newsletter!
The group typically meets in person on the second Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 5:30. Unfortunately, the Governor has ordered people to not meet because of COVID. During this time, we will be meeting via Zoom. Check your email the first Tuesday of the month for the link. We are asking for youth to turn in their monthly assignment (see below) via email.

Thank you for working on behalf of yourself and other foster youth!
LAST MEETING SUMMARY:
Last YAB meeting summary: We're continuing to work on "youth engagement". Ideas include: Monthly Newsletter, social media platform, various activities. The State YAB meetings are now held quarterly. You can become involved by asking your state worker to join these meetings. We encourage this. They want you to voice your opinions...let your voice be heard!

THIS MONTH'S ASSIGNMENT:
This month’s assignment is to create a vision board. Vision boards are simple and easy to make. Vision boards are pictures and big letters consisting of your goals outlined for the new year or for the next 5 years. Seeing your goals in front of you every day helps you to set your focus on your goals on a daily base, and of course to live the other important part of the law of attraction, believing that you have already achieved that goal. By looking at your vision board every day you can trigger a process that will re-program your subconscious mind. It will change your current self and bring you to your new self.

Supplies Needed:
An empty canvas or big piece of paper or cardboard, glue, markers (preferably in different colors), scissors, magazines or other media (or a printer to print pictures).

1. Get your big blank canvas
2. Cut out some pictures or words representing your goals from magazines, books, or other media.
3. Glue to the blank canvas!!
4. Hang up on wall.

Please complete this assignment by February 2 2021. This will also be your way of getting a free raffle ticket which will allow you to earn a prize!

Foster parents please help with this because if your foster child submits this assignment your name will also go into a raffle ticket, and you can earn a prize as well.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC:
Identifying the type of work you want to do so you can get the job you want.
NEXT MONTH'S TOPIC:
We're discussing how to shop for meals on a budget.
YOUTH QUOTE OF THE MONTH:
“We can not always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”

-Franklin D. Roosevelt

SOMETHING FUN TO TRY:
This activity is extremely exciting, cheap, and easy to do...which is why we've left it in for another month! This fun family activity will allow foster youth and foster parents to connect and spend time together to help build a healthy relationship between one another. This will get everyone to have fun and relax, so they can experience that family bonding feeling. It's also kid friendly.

So who’s ready to make a masterpiece?!

Instructions
  1. Print out or use a coloring page for a design. Once everyone has found a design tape to the back of the glass.
  2. Mix black acrylic paint about 4 tablespoons to regular Elmer’s glue. Shake vigorously, make sure Elmer’s glue is all black. This will be used to trace the design taped to the back of the glass. Once design has been traced, allow to dry.

THIS MONTH'S OPPORTUNITY

What Is The Homeless Point In Time Count? (PIT)
The point in time count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered count of youth in local areas, these youth are experiencing homelessness. This count takes place on January 28th. HUD requires that Continuums of Care conduct an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing, and Safe Havens during these 24 hours in January.

With the need for social distancing, this year's event will look much different than those of years' past. In previous years, we have held both outdoor and indoor events at a central location where youth come to be counted, receive items, and eat hot meals. For 2021, we are pivoting and conducting a street outreach-style count, where surveyors will collect data about “unsheltered” youth who are sleeping outside.

With COVID-19 cases continuing to increase in our area, it is more important than ever that we get an accurate count of this vulnerable population and the ways the pandemic have affected their circumstances. We are hopeful that our street outreach will reach even more homeless youth than our prior, centralized counts. We are working hard on planning to make this the most successful count yet.

Our hope is that you will choose one of the following way to help, below:
  1. Volunteer - Go to SignUp.com to see the volunteer opportunities for the upcoming Homeless Youth Count.
    1) Click this link, https://signup.com/go/TFJUgRK

    3) Sign up! It's Easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on SignUp.com.
  2. Solicit Donations - Help us collect various gift cards and buffet vouchers to give out to the homeless youth who take the survey.
Volunteer jobs include:
  1. Surveyor - surveying youth using Counting App and questionnaire Idea
  2. Surveyor Support – supporting those conducting surveys
  3. Relationship Builders (outreach) to connect with and begin to build “readiness”.
  4. Action Workers with a shuttle for those “ready” to access the shelter, showers, laundry.
Those volunteering will receive a “training video” covering PPE use during the event, the Counting App, the Survey Questions, the jobs, incentive and voucher use and mapped work area.

I truly hope you can join in and help with this important event.
