In the admittedly horrible year that was 2020, there were a few bright spots for me, and I hope for you too. Things like having fire pits and picnics. Hiking solo. Watching sunsets. Doing crosswords with my sweetie. Getting published at last in the New York Times. And the exciting news I've been waiting a couple months to share: I'm officially writing my second book!

The tentative title is Anywhereist: How Finding the Right Place Can Help You Grow Your Career, Make More Money, and Design a Life You Love. Basically I'm trying to answer the question, "If you can work anywhere, where should you live? Does it even matter?" (Spoiler: Yes.) I'll share how our places impact our work, finances, careers, and life balance, and how people who aren't tethered to a place by a job make choices about where to live.

Sourcebooks will publish Anywhereist in 2022. In the meantime, I need your help! If you are someone who can work from anywhere, can I ask you a few questions? Right now I'm especially interested in Anywhereists who have moved or are thinking about it, digital nomads, and basically anyone who has an opinion about how their location has influenced what they do for a living or how they do it. If that's you, or someone you know, please email me and share a bit of your story.

Happy new year!
Shameless self-promotion portion of the newsletter: I'm stoked that This Is Where You Belong will be the final act in Proud Places' 2021 book club, because seriously, check out that lineup! I'm also still doing a few virtual book clubs and online speaking events. If you're interested, get in touch.

  4. The best part about writing a new book is calling up cool people like Jason Duff and forcing them to talk to me for an hour about how they're making their places better.
  5. Which movies do the best job evoking place for you? Gotta say, Jaws is right up there for me.
  6. How we're going to make it through this winter: going outside again and again.
  7. Community meals: yet another thing to chalk up under What I'll Be Happy to Do Again Once the Whole Country is Vaccinated.

P.S.—As always, random bonus material for reading this far: I got two Grittys for Christmas! For when you've already abandoned your new year's resolutions. Love this list of stuff to look forward to (and her newsletter rocks). My hefty year in books (this and this were among the faves). People are good. Bald child alignment chart. My Christmas gift for my mom lets me get inside her head. See what they did there? Maybe the lure of the solvable problem is why we got so into playing games over Christmas. Dialect quiz. Start the next one tomorrow.
