Snowbirds have a reputation for slowing traffic on roads in the valley. These snowbirds are no exception. One of them is stopped, staring at the driver with a look that says, "Hey! We're walking here."

...After the Earthquake
It’s great that you made it through the shaking but what you do now is critical. These points are important to follow:

~ Check for injuries around you and also your neighbors.
~ Secure your pet(s) for their safety.
~ Check your home for damage, the smell of gas, water leaks and smoke.
~ If your home is badly damaged and you feel unsafe, leave slowly and carefully taking your emergency supplies with you. Wear heavy clothes, shoes, and gloves if possible.
~ Shut off electric power at the main breaker if there is damage to your electrical wiring.
~ Shut off gas if you smell it or can hear it leaking.
~ If your water is off drink melted ice cubes or your stored water. Don’t use unclean water from swimming pool, spas, toilet tanks, etc.
~ Clean up potentially dangerous liquid spills, or broken glass.
~ Listen to radio instructions from public safety agencies. Remember your car radio may work.
~ If you evacuate your home leave a note at your door telling others where you have gone.

And possibly most importantly, expect aftershocks. Some may be as large as the original quake!

We hopefully will never need this advice, but you never know…

Thanks to Kate Hiddleston, the former Los Lagos Earthquake Preparedness Committee, and the City of Palm Desert for the information in this Series.

Our Own Farmers Market

In case you haven’t heard, we are lucky that the Indian Wells Farmers Market is right across Hwy 111 in the old Ralph’s parking lot. This outdoor marketplace is held every Thursday from 8 am until 2 pm.  You can walk through the Michigan Court pedestrian gate and nearly be there. Reports back on this new community activity are very positive. The well-known local vendors and new certified producers are helpful and offer some great food and wares. Some of our neighbors already have favorites, for example the breads and the organic poultry. Be aware that all Covid-19 safety protocols are adhered to, so take your masks!

Solar Panels Update

Last month we asked you to tell us why there are three times as many solar installations in the north end of Los Lagos than in the south. The consistent answer was the herd effect – people tend to do what their neighbors are doing. One person pointed to the clusters on the map as evidence of this effect.

In Memoriam

Popular former resident Herb Costner died on January 13th with his family by his side. Herb had moved from a local retirement facility to Dallas several months ago to be with his son and family. He and his partner Carroll were a center of Los Lagos life during the many years that they lived here. Herb was retired as a  Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington where he had worked for many years, both teaching and in administrative positions. All of we who knew him will mourn his passing.

A Message from Ilayna Turcott, HOA President

The painter we contracted to paint the Cook Street wall did a good job, so we asked him for a quote to paint the inside of the walls on the West side by Colony Cove, on the North side along Fred Waring, together with the South wall.

We approved a contractor to replace the doors on the wood phone cabinet at the South end of the community and to repair the Michigan Court gate. Work is scheduled to start on Thursday of this week.

Pool 2 will be closed February 12-13 for electrical repairs. It’s a Friday-Saturday and it might affect some peoples' plans. Pool 4 is heated and open.

In the next few weeks we will have an arborist from GML walk the community to identify trees requiring removal.

The next board meeting will be on March 15th at 2:00pm.  Avail will be sending out a Zoom invitation just prior to the meeting date. Future meetings will be every two months on the third Monday of the month.

And I can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit and for the rain to stop. January was too much like Seattle.
