ALIA Information Online 2021  

ALIA | 5 February 2021 

There's still time to register, and join more than 400 participants who will be virtually attending ALIA's upcoming Information Online 2021 conference through our ALIA institutional member registration options. We have teams from state, university, public and school libraries set to hear from industry leaders and engage with more than 40 exhibitors. Australian Library Design Awards 2021

Thank you to everyone who submitted their library to the ALIA-run Australian Library Design Awards 2021, we have an impressive 33 entries from across the nation. Digital Health Literacy program 

ALIA | 31 March 2021

The timeframe for the Digital Health Literacy online free training has been extended until 31 March 2021. This nationwide initiative provides training to library staff on how users can navigate and understand the new Federal Government digital health initiatives, such as My Health Record and assists libraries to better support their communities, and engage with other likeminded organisations. Library and Information Week 2021 will be the time to celebrate all the things that Australian library and information services do, with the theme ‘Adventures in Space and Time’. ALIA responds to SA Early Learning Strategy

ALIA has posted a response to the South Australian Department for Education's Early Learning Strategy, which calls attention to the role of public libraries in childhood development. 

Changes to ALIA guidelines 

ALIA regularly reviews and updates its policies and guidelines. Most recently ALIA reviewed Foundation Knowledge, Skills and Attributes relevant to Information Professionals working in Archives, Libraries and Records Management and the APLA-ALIA Standards and Guidelines for Australian Public Libraries

University and academic news 

The ANU Library digitisation team was busy over 2020, as it created the following: Tooth HotelThe Land of the Lyrebird; the Charles Morris Woodford collection; and the Burns Philp ship ledgers, among many other online albums. The University of Sydney Library will no longer charge overdue fines from 18 January 2021, and OCLC is hosting the webinar, Academic library work meets sustainable development.

National and State Library news 

The National Library is hosting school holiday diorama workshops; it unearthed one of the world's oldest boxes of chocolates (owned by poet Banjo Paterson), and it is restarting its Treasures Gallery tours. Trove is in the process of digitising the papers of former PM Sir Robert Menzies. Patrick Gregory from Library and Archives NT was interviewed for an ABC News article about the release of Northern Territory government documents from 1990. Face masks are now mandatory for visitors at the State Library of NSW, and the library partnered with the technology company Youngster.co to help older Australians navigate QR codes and apps during the pandemic. Check out the make and design section on the State Library of Queensland website as well as its quiz and memory games. The State Library of WA has partnered with Public Libraries Western Australia to launch a new online book club. The State Library Victoria's CEO Kate Torney was interviewed for The Age article, 'Lapsed bookworm? How you can get back into the habit of reading'. Cultural institutions including the National Museum, the National Library, and the National Archives are collecting historic items from 2020

School library and children's literature news

Here are some tips to help children develop a love of reading, and a Conversation article argues that students need to learn academic words. Children and their caregivers are encouraged to participate in the Summer Reading Club, which is organised by the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Government. Downloadable writing tips, activities and a 2021 calendar are available from the Australian Children's Laureate Foundation. The Students Need School Libraries team is seeking signatures for two petitions, both of which call for higher school library standards. 

COVID-19 update

Read the May-November 2020 COVIDsafe report from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Inner West Libraries, NSW, is seeking feedback from its users to explore the response by public libraries across Australia to the COVID-19 crisis. The CBC has published the article, 'Why there's no consensus on library book quarantines'. The NSW Government has created FAQ's in regards to common questions about face mask rules. The Greater Brisbane COVID-19 restrictions have changed: anyone in the five local government areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and the Redlands must wear a mask until 10:00am 22 January in public areas including libraries. 

Public library news 

In NSW, Bathurst Library has hosted a Speechie Library Talk; Central West Libraries is hosting a summer reading event; Dubbo Library is hosting a youth trivia night and build and borrow sessions; Eurobodalla Library is running an exhibition chronicling the early years of granite mining in the shire; Inner West Libraries worked with author Will Kostakis on a series of writing workshops; Kempsey Library is seeking feedback on the future of its library; and Wellington Library is running holiday games. In Victoria, Moonee Valley Libraries has a seed library available across all five branches, Robinvale Community Library will open its doors for the first time on 18 January; Yarra Plenty Regional Library has new extended opening hours. Additionally, Melton City Libraries and Yarra Libraries are engaged in a Game of loans: Battle royale reading competition; and after 14 years as CEO of Geelong Regional Library Corporation, Patti Manolis OAM AALIA will be stepping down from the role at the end of March 2021. In the ACT, Belconnen Library has a new mural. In WA, a rare second-edition of an historic book has been re-discovered at the City of Vincent LibraryLibraries Tasmania is collecting COVID-19 stories from members of its community. In related news, hundreds of documents held by the Public Record Office Victoria have been made public as part of Public Record Office Victoria’s annual Section 9 openings, and Hayley Webster, Library Manager at Museums Victoria was interviewed by ArtsHub

Increase in ebook borrowing in 2020

Publishers Weekly | 7 January 2021

According to OverDrive, readers worldwide borrowed some 430 million e-books, audiobooks and digital magazines across 2020, a 33% increase over 2019 based on data drawn from more than 65,000 libraries and schools worldwide. You can read more on the website

Arts and media news 

Community groups and organisations across the Riverina and Central West can apply for a share in $150,000 through Round Six of the Stronger Communities Programme. Expressions of Interest are open until 19 February 2021. In book awards news, the shortlist for the Peter Porter Poetry Prize and the winner of the Small Press Network Book of the Year 2020 were announced. The 2020 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards; the Russell Prize for Humour Writing 2021, and the Pixie O'Harris Award have all called for nominations. Information about the upcoming 2021 Australian Book Industry Awards is now live on the website. In related news, the Australian Book Designers Association has revealed its favourite covers from 2020, and Magabala Books has announced the recipient of the inaugural Magabala Fellowship for a mid-career author.

 INTERNATIONAL

IFLA update

Applications are open for the IFLA PressReader International Library Marketing Award for 2021. Read the latest 10-minute International librarian post, make a library resolution. You can also listen to the IFLA CPDWL Podcast Project, the first episode features Christine Mackenzie, IFLA President and CPDWL Co-Chair Gill Hallam as host. IFLA has released a statement on open and good governance, and its key findings of the WLIC 2021 surveys. It is also celebrating the Public Domain in 2021, and it's seeking feedback via a survey to update the IFLA Intellectual Freedom Statement. The deadline for responses is 31 January 2021.

International news 

In the US, have you read the most popular books borrowed from the New York Public Library? The Institute of Museum and Library Services has released information about public library usage across 2017. At Oakland University, Michigan, a rare book librarian is highlighting the works of historic female writers. Academic libraries have been hit hard by the pandemic. Read the report from Ithaka S+R on the matter. Many works have entered the public domain including books by F Scott Fitzgerald, and Virginia Woolf. In Canada, read about the search for copies of Sir Isaac Newton’s Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, and the most popular books borrowed from the Greater Victoria Public Library's branches. In Europe, a library been refurbished in Latvia to encourage children to read, in the UK, the Government has announced a fund to help tackle loneliness which will run through organisations including libraries and radio stations.

Vale Lawley Yukich

ALIA extends its condolences to the family and friends of former ALIA Member Lawley Yukich AALIA (CP) who passed late in 2020. Lawley was an active and dedicated librarian in Western Australia and will be missed by his colleagues and community.

INCITE in conversation

ALIA | 28 January 2021

Mary Coe AALIA and Rebecca Muir AALIA, both pursuing PhDs through the School of Information Studies at Charles Sturt University, will chat to INCITE Editor Andrew Finegan AALIA (CP) about their experience of undergoing doctoral research whilst working full-time. Their article will be featured in the January/February 2021 issue of INCITE, and this will be a chance to delve more into what it means to become a practitioner-researcher, the challenges experienced along this path, and how combining research with practice can bring more value to one's work and knowledge. This is a free event but you need to pre-register to receive the Zoom link to the event.

Safer Internet Day 2021

Safer Internet Day will be celebrated on 9 February. Libraries can register their interest to celebrate the day. This day is run by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner.
