Thanks to so many faithful friends, including Don, we can still smile at year's end. And we take this opportunity to promote those other faithful "wild" friends who share our island home.
Thank You For Your Support All Year Long!
The members of the Board of the Cobourg Museum Foundation would like to express our sincere appreciation to our Members, friends, visitors and all the other supporters. You have helped us successfully navigate this strange year.
We know that many individuals and organizations have not been as fortunate as we have been and we want you to know how appreciative we are for your help. We wish you all the best as we move forward into a year which still holds uncertainty but also the promise of better things to come!
Featuring From Our Book Store
From time to time we will be featuring a book from our new Book Store. Today it is from our new book selection by local authors.
"The Wildlife of Cobourg Harbour" by Margaret Bain
Local and widely recognized ornithologist, Dr. Margaret Bain, has combined the photographic skills and insights of other nature lovers with her own extensive knowledge to present us with a lovely introduction to the life of our Harbour, season by season. Not by any means a big book with a big price tag, this 32 page booklet is packed with pictures of birds, other wildlife and the habitat they share with us.
In the introductory Overview Clive Goodwin includes a reminder that too often this precious area, particularly the Headland, “has been pressed into use for short-term reasons such as dumping and parking” without reference to the long-term destruction this can cause. But he sees hope - “More and more people are coming to appreciate ... such places ... and the unexpected delights they can yield”.
For just $10 you too can enjoy those delights through the eyes of Margaret and her photographer friends! You can visit the book store by clicking HERE, or going to www.cobourgmuseumbooks.ca.
More Wildlife, From Jennifer
Congratulations to Jennifer Thornhill for her fine 6-page spread in the December/January edition of Our Canada Magazine. Jennifer lives in Grafton and in the early days of the Sifton-Cook Heritage Centre was a Board Member and Volunteer Coordinator as well as a member of the Exhibit Team.
Titled “Wild Neighbours”, the article has some amazing pictures including a close up of the handsomest red fox. These wild animals truly are our neighbours with only the black bear out of province. But as Jennifer says, “We are lucky to have a beautiful country with such a variety of landscapes and wildlife from coast to coast to coast".
She dreams of someday having “the opportunity to photograph polar bears under the northern lights”. In the meantime, for the rest of us, there is still the wonderful Cobourg Harbour!
On A Sad Note
Bringing a difficult year to an end on a sad note, we learned of the sudden passing of our friend Colin Caldwell. Colin, as a writer and amateur historian, was naturally drawn to the developing museum/heritage centre, ready to contribute in any way he could, always with a smile. He served on the Board of Directors before the opening of the Centre, contributing to the vision which eventually emerged. (Colin is wearing the beret - try clicking to enlarge.)
We add a personal note from Stanley Isherwood, our Treasurer:
“I think of Colin’s interests as nothing if not eclectic. In recalling a 2009 visit to Vermont, I wrote about my stop at the Main Street Museum in White River Junction. ‘What a place! It’s an amazing mishmash of all things strange with no interest in scientific accuracy or, as far as I could make out, in helping the visitor make much sense of it all. I wish Colin Caldwell had been there to experience it with me!’ He would have figured it all out!"
