Monthly Parent Q&A:

Programs remain in the same state as before the holiday break. We eagerly await updates from AHS and further news that may impact our ability to serve our members. For this reason, we have not set a date for the January Q&A zoom session. We hope to have a date for you sometime in mid January. Until then, We appreciate suggestions for topics to include in the agenda. Send suggestions to mike@calgarycanoeclub.com
As of January 5th the Canoe Club building remains closed. As in late December, some paddlers continue to Run in North Glenmore park.

CCC Runners checklist:
  • never run alone or leave your partner behind
  • meet at specified time and location
  • wear a headlamp while running after dark
  • be in groups of not more than 5
  • wear masks if not possible to stay 2m apart (even outside)
  • avoid mingling with other groups of 5
  • maintain safe and respectable distance from other park users

Note: CCC has secured a small number of headlamps for the runners. CLICK HERE to view headlamps.

Coaches are working to better serve our athletes from a distance.
Coaches have started to use TrainingPeaks to improve program planning and monitoring. We are grateful to the support of our provincial sport body (ASRCA) for supporting this project. Do not expect rapid or major changes in communication or programming between coach and athlete, we expect coaches to learn how to best use the system over the year.

Trainingpeaks & Heart Rate Monitors
Although not required for the team training, paddlers may receive additional individualized feedback if training with a heart rate monitor. If you have questions about this please reach out to your coach. If shopping for heart rate monitor we recommend a chest strap with memory storage that will sync to your wristwatch. Many HR straps will transmit direct to a watch or the paired device in real time. However, when we again start swim training, most straps will have difficulty communicating with the watch while under water. If the strap has memory storage, it will re-pair and sync the workout data once out of the water.

Yoga each Wednesday with Emily over Zoom.  Zoom link is provided to paddlers within the WhatsApp group.

The clubhouse is closed but does not hinder the ability to build endurance (heart & lungs), outside in the fresh air. The team has made fantastic progress with running, however we can still improve. This winter is an opportunity to attack it full on. When we can again attend our first competition, "fitness will not be the factor that limits our performance". Fitness is in our Control. Note: Where snow conditions allow, replace on-your-own run workouts with time on the skis.

Partnerships: Coaches continue to support paddlers with strength and other modes of training. Coaches will be reaching out to paddlers to help individualize training based on their personal situations and access to personal equipment. Paddlers/Parents are encouraged to reach out to coaches for additional support, we want our coach/paddler/parents partnership to grow. Please subscribe to our updated newsletter list.
