Dear Parents and Guardians,

Today, on the feast of the Epiphany of our Lord, our Church traditionally remembers how the three wise men arrived to visit the Holy Family in Bethlehem, bringing gifts for the newborn King.  I would like to take some time to share with all of you a reflection on three recent gifts of our own.

Before Christmas break, we began our “Giving Tree” project, encouraging families to donate hats, gloves, mittens, etc. for those in need.  Our tree was overflowing with donated items by the end of December.  However, our fifth graders were inspired to go above and beyond and organized a fund-raiser to help give even more.  With their help, we were able to fill four boxes with gloves and hats that will be delivered to the Women's Care Center and raise over $200 to donate to the Christ Child Society!

As much as we love to give gifts, we also give thanks for gifts we have received.  Recently, many talented Holy Cross community members have given us the chance to share Holy Cross with the Michiana community and beyond.  We give thanks for articles like this in the South Bend Tribune and videos like this from Notre Dame’s ACE program, enabling us to share Holy Cross’ treasures with those around us.

Finally, we give thanks for the gift of funds from an anonymous donor, allowing us to fund a full-time bilingual reading specialist for the remainder of the year.  As we all know, in March of 2020, in-person learning was disrupted throughout the country.  Though Holy Cross worked tirelessly to ensure every family had access to virtual instruction, the absence of face-to-face instruction and the routines of the classroom had obvious effects on many students and a need for reading intervention became obvious at the beginning of this school year.  Holy Cross recently received funds that will allow us to meet this critical need and we are forever grateful! Please join me in welcoming Caley Rolt as our Reading Interventionist and After School Tutoring Program coordinator.

This week, our 5th grade class will plan and attend the mass with the 3rd and 4th grade. If you have a child in any of those grades, you are welcome to come and celebrate Mass in the church, otherwise you can view the live-stream Mass via Zoom. Please look for the link later in this newsletter.

Queridos padres y guardianes,

Each year the Church celebrates on January 1st the annual World Day of Peace, established by Pope Paul VI in 1968. In this year’s message, Pope Francis invites all people to be engaged in the work of advocating for and with those whose voices are marginalized, to ensure the protection and fulfillment of the “youngest and smallest” of God’s people. “Hope” is at the heart of Pope Francis’ World Day of Peace message, which opens with the statement: “Peace is a great and precious value, the object of our hope and the aspiration of the entire human family.” Hope, he writes, is “the virtue that inspires us and keeps us moving forward, even when obstacles seem insurmountable.”
Peace is a process that requires enduring commitment, Francis states. “It is a patient effort to seek truth and justice, to honor the memory of victims and to open the way, step by step, to a shared hope stronger than the desire for vengeance.” The Pope concludes with a renewed call “for a peaceful relationship between communities and the land, between present and past, between experience…and hope.” This new year affords us the opportunity to be people who will bring the hope of peace and justice to our neighborhood, country and world.
