The Sportsplex and COVID-19 Restrictions

We often receive questions about why we have specific restrictions, suggestions on what should be done differently, or complaints about safety precautions. We also received compliments for our restrictions and precautions, which we are thankful for. We appreciate it everyone time someone sends an email or message letting us know that they feel safe, or appreciate our safety measures.

At the very start of the restrictions, we have requirements that come from the Provincial Government. We are informed of the restrictions at the same time as everyone else. Staff tune into the updates provided by Premier MacNeil and Dr. Strang, and we go from there. We must follow these restrictions, or we would not be allowed to operate.

How we work within the Provincial restrictions is based on a number of factors:
  • The layout of our building
  • The capacity of our staff
  • If the approach we are taking is new to us and we need to proceed carefully to ensure success
We were recently asked why some of our high-intensity fitness classes had their maximum numbers drop after we reopened again in December.  When we reopened in December, high-intensity classes were required to have 10 feet of space between patrons, instead of 6. To follow this rule, we had to lower the number of people allowed in the class. The class space was measured to be sure our numbers were accurate.

Spectators are also an area we receive many questions about. While spectators are currently not allowed at facilities, they were prior to our second COVID-19 shut down. We understand that it is important for parents/guardians to watch their children play hockey in person, but being a spectator is considered a privilege, not an essential service. The safety of our staff, and what we feel we can reasonable accommodate as a facility, will always take first priority.

Our walking track has lower numbers, despite being in the arena because the actual walking/running space is narrow. It would be difficult to maintain physical distancing while passing patrons who are walking/running at different speeds if we allow more people to book on the track at the same time.

The restrictions we have in place are developed by staff, based on the criteria that are provided by the Provincial Government. Not everyone will agree with them, and we are certain that people will have their own ideas of what they should be, or what would work better. We want you to know that we consider every one of our restrictions very carefully, and always put the safety of our patrons and staff first.

Celebrating Black History
Eli Goree

There's not a lot of information available about Eli Goree, but we do know he is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and he is making waves in Hollywood. From portraying Muhammad Ali in One Night in Miami to working alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, a world-famous celebrity who also has roots in Nova Scotia, Eli Goree's career is just beginning to take off.

Though he currently resides in Los Angeles (according to his social media), he began his career here in Nova Scotia. At a young age, he was cast in Sesame Park, the Canadian version of Sesame Street. He hosted The Big Black Rap Show on Canadian campus radio CKDU-FM, followed by holding the TV host position for Street Cents three years later.

Eli seems to keep his private life under wraps, which isn't hard to understand. Privacy in the age of the internet and social media is difficult, even when you're not a celebrity. But if you're interested in seeing his work, Eli can be found in shows like Ballers (with The Rock), Pearson, Riverdale, and stars in the recently released One Night in Miami, as Cassius Clay, aka Muhammad Ali. He has had guest appearances in shows such as Glow, The 100, Supernatural, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. He received a Leo Award for best supporting performance by a male for his role in Race, a Jesse Owens biopic.

If you're interested in following the life and career of Halifax's Eli Goree, you can check out his
