Fireworks show caps holiday weekend     

Schweitzer Mountain Resort is measuring new snow by the feet as storm after storm continues to roll in. In addition to the great skiing and boarding conditions, the resort has a few big events coming up this month. there are also a few events coming up that Looking ahead to the MLK Weekend Jan. 15-18, the resort hosts their annual Northern Lights fireworks show the night of Jan. 16, plus check out the snow bar set up in the village all weekend long. And the following week, it's time for the Toyota Free Ski Friday - just drive your Toyota to the mountain Jan. 22 and get a lift ticket for the day. A reminder that this year, daily lift tickets must be purchased ahead of time at Schweitzer.com.

Take a (winter) hike!  

If 2021 is your year to get into the great outdoors, try one of the guided snowshoe hikes happening this month with Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness volunteers. Hiking in wintertime is a fun, rewarding experience, and provides a chance to explore our wild backyard on snowshoe with fellow nature lovers. Hikes include the Star Peak - Welcome in the New Year Hike on Jan. 8 and a Regal Creek Snowshoe Hike Jan. 10; more include a Ross Creek Cedars Snowshoe Jan. 23; and Round Lake Stewardship Hike Jan. 29. Brewpub's new digs 

Sandpoint's popular MickDuff's Brewpub recently moved a few blocks over to their newly renovated home in the historic former post office building at 419. N Second Ave. The popular brewpub was previously located on First Avenue in downtown Sandpoint. Customers are raving about the new space, which includes a large indoor seating area and bar, while still enjoying the same MickDuff's handcrafted ales and delicious food. Close-to-town XC skiing, rentals and all

Sandpoint Nordic Club provides affordable rentals right onsite at the Pine Street Woods' Outdoor Recreation Center, plus has learn-to-ski classes and provides a daily grooming report at SandpointNordic.com. Here are a few events coming up at PSW that are fun to try (rentals are available at an additional cost):
- Beginner Level Classic and Skate Lessons. Learn how to ski with improved efficiency. Lessons will be in a small group setting with experienced instructors.
Dates: Jan. 16 and Jan. 23: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Cost: $25
- Women's Skate Clinic. The day will include skill level specific technique development. Bring your own lunch and enjoy a glass of wine around the fire pits to end the session.
Date: Jan. 24: noon to 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $50 for members, $65 for non-members

  • Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. Trails for all levels with the Meadow Loop for beginners, and the Big Hill Loop for a long ski through the trees. Check-in at the lodge to get a trail pass.
  • Schweitzer Mountain. Stretching over 32 kilometers, the resort's Nordic trails offer spectacular views in every direction with terrain for all levels.

Mask mandate in place for North Idaho

Reminder that a mask mandate remains in effect for the Panhandle Health District, which includes Sandpoint and Bonner County. Folks are required to wear face coverings when near others in public, and PHD asks everyone to be vigilant in distancing and sanitation.
