Welcome back—to 2021! We hope you got a few moments to recharge during the break. Here at HUIT AT, we’re back and ready to share this month’s platform news. And as we move through Wintersession toward Spring, we’ll continue to keep you informed of changes and address challenges as they come.

Teaching and Learning Remotely

Zoom updates for teaching & learning

  • Instructors in a course can now edit (add or delete) the automatic Alternative Hosts for a course.
  • Nonverbal feedback options have been moved to the Reactions button, and all reactions will be shown in the corner of the participants’ video.
  • When scheduling a meeting through the LTI in Canvas, the “Breakout Room pre-assign” meeting option is not yet available. Use these work-arounds:
    • Schedule the meeting in the Canvas LTI and then enable the selected option for the meeting on the Zoom website (harvard.zoom.us).
    • Schedule the meeting on the Zoom website and then Import the meeting into a course with the Canvas LTI.
  • Remind teaching staff and students to upgrade their Zoom desktop clients to be able to use self-select breakout rooms. Only those using the desktop client or mobile app version 5.3.0 or higher can use this feature. It’s not available at all when using the web browser interface. Hosts that use the self-select feature will need to assign participants manually to breakout rooms if participants have not updated to 5.3+ or are using the web browser interface.
  • For those interested in all things Zoom, this post about The Year in Review: Zoom Feature & Product Highlights is a good reminder of the changes that came in 2020.

Canvas

In Production

To Be Released 1/16

Delayed until 2/20

  • The View Ungraded as 0 option in the Gradebook will allow an instructor to view student grades as if all ungraded assignments were worth zero points.

A Friendly Reminder to Canvas Admins

Your elevated access within Canvas is powerful. If you (or fellow staff members) enroll in a Harvard course, ensure that you log out of your admin role and log in with your XID to participate as a student. We're working with Instructure to address our concerns about staff having dual roles in Canvas, but having an XID is currently the only method to support this use case.

Poll Everywhere

  • Starting Monday, January 25, presenters who delete an Activity will have 30 days to restore it from their Trash folder. After 30 days, activities in the Trash will be automatically deleted. These activities will be permanently removed and not recoverable by the user, HUIT AT, or Poll Everywhere.
  • The Pollev.com menu will soon display menu items vertically on the left side of the screen instead of displaying horizontally on the top.

Feature updates:

  • Users can now attach recently used files--in one click--from the paperclip menu.
  • In iOS: sharing files into Slack from outside Slack (e.g. from the photos app) has been improved. Teammates’ pictures and full names are visible, ensuring files are sent to the right person or channel.
