<<First Name>>
We all have done it. You are running late and in a hurry to head out the door when you reach into the drawer to grab a pair of socks. You slip them on only to realize there is a hole in them. Looking at the clock you decide to press on anyway. You won’t allow a minor irritation disrupt your day. But before you know it, that little irritation grows and finds its way to your big toe. It doesn’t matter where the hole started, by the end of the day it will always find your big toe!
I began my new year cleaning out my sock drawer. As Amy Lindquist reminded us last year in our Simplify message series, “our closets are precious real estate.” So I decided I wasn’t going to allow old tattered socks to take up any more space. The new year is often a season of reflection and evaluation as we consider what changes we want to make in the coming year. For me it is also a season of purging. Are there things we don’t want to carry with us into the new year? Is there an area of our life that has become cluttered and needs our attention? Don’t allow what starts as a minor irritant to grow, becoming a bigger problem that ruins your day.
As we begin this new year, we are examining what it means to be human(e). This past week I kicked off our series sharing how when God created us, he set us apart from all of creation, by giving us three gifts: the gift of life, a calling/task, and the gift of grace. As we go into this new year, I invite you to consider the gifts God has given you. Being human(e) is about living a life that reflects the gifts we have been given.
The Apostle Paul encourages us to live from a place of grace. He writes: 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:12-14). It isn’t a list of ways we can earn God’s love, but reflects a life flowing from God’s grace. Living from a place of grace means recognizing when it’s time to throw out the old socks and start fresh.
Happy New Year!
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Gordon
PS. Even after cleaning out my sock drawer yesterday, my big toe still managed to find a hole. Keep cleaning, keep purging, and give yourself the grace you need today!
