Church of the Epiphany // January 7, 2021
We Warmly Welcome Rev. John Davis!

Bishop Kevin has officially assigned the Rev. John Davis to be the deacon affiliated with Epiphany and St. Peter's.
Rev. John and I will work out a schedule, expectations, duties, limitations over the next few weeks as we discuss what is needed where.
Please officially welcome Rev. John to our family!
With abundant joy,
Mo. Lou
An Excerpt from Rev. John's 1/3/21 Sermon at Epiphany:

(Rev. John's words last Sunday stuck a chord so asked if I might share them with the larger parish and friends. While Epiphany isn't operating in the way many are used to and sorely miss, Epiphany IS alive and well, doing God's work in the world. Deacon John's fresh perspective helped me to see that our 108 year old church is "...alive with worship, service, and mission!" Thank you, Rev. John.
- Barbara Little, editor)

“At the heart of Christmas is us allowing Jesus, to be the "Word made flesh” in our hearts and minds and hands. Working in our relationship with Christ Jesus means we… care for the stranger, for the poor, for the jobless, for the homeless, for the friendless, for the sick and suffering, for the hungry, for those in any need or trouble, as we strive to promote the dignity, and freedom of every person.  You may not be aware, but you do these things here yourselves! The Church of the Epiphany is alive with worship, service and mission! The immeasurable greatness of his power can be witnessed here. You all act like a family. You look out for each other. You notice when someone is absent. You feed and clothe the needy. You nurture the young and sick among you. You did not let COVID-19 stop you. You will take risks, and pray for the best. You all are a team, a congregation that is willing to try anything! You let Joe convince you, to collect over 550 pounds of plastic, so far. You are continuing to cook meals for those in need and then they are delivered to where the need is. What about meals-on-wheels? What about the clothing drop off? What about the walking path and pavilion? What about the connections being made with other faith groups nearby, collaborating on ways to serve more effectively? What about going virtual with worship, so that no one becomes lost? These are just some of the things that are obvious to me. What is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe? I pray that you will continue to serve the Christ present in all people; loving your neighbor as yourself!”

Bible Study Resources

Looking to Pick-up a Good Habit in the New Year?
Here are Some Bible Reading Suggestions

New International Version of the Bible on Kindle.

What I like about this version is the readings are chronological rather than book by book, verse by verse. The chronology is based on the beginning around 5,000 BCE according to Jewish legend about the formation of the earth. The readings are continuing through the generations from Adam, Enoch, etc. The psalms are seen as part of the story and are inserted where they might have been written.

I have read the Bible for many years, cover to cover, and I was looking for something different. This is a bit uncomfortable, but quite interesting (I'm only a few days into it...)

Find a Bible that works for you. This worked for me a couple of times - https://thebiblechallenge.org/

Or you might try one of these Bible reading plans:

https://www.ligonier.org/blog/bible-reading-plans/

I keep rereading the Bible because there is always something 'new' that makes me wonder!

The GOOD BOOK Club,
The Gospel Of Mark | Epiphany 2021

The Good Book Club picks up again on January 1 through Shrove Tuesday, February 16, with the Gospel of Mark. … you’ll have a chance to dive deep into the scripture through the Good Book Club and then spend time with Mark throughout 2021!  We know you have a lot going on, so we wanted to make this year’s Good Book Club accessible and easy to participate in. Along with partners from across the Episcopal Church, the Good Book Club offers daily podcasts of the readings and reflections, online book studies (live classes and pre-recorded), weekly preview emails, and different ways to participate via social media. Visit our resources page to learn more and sign up for classes https://www.goodbookclub.org/resources/

Here is a wonderful resource for those interested in delving more deeply into the Gospel of Mark, a FREE, live course called Introducing Mark with Vicki Garvey as a Good Book Club offering during Epiphany.

We welcome participants from across the world, whether or not you are participating in the Good Book Club formally — it’s a great chance to learn more about Mark’s Gospel.

Vicki is a respected teacher and author and former Canon for Lifelong Education at the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. She has led workshops across the United States and internationally on Bible study, and we are very blessed to have her teaching this class. Vicki has already taught live courses on the Gospel of John and the Gospel of Matthew.

From January 7 through February 11, every Thursday night at 8 p.m. E.S.T., participants will click on a link to a Zoom classroom to listen to Vicki Garvey’s talks about Mark’s Gospel and to ask questions/participate in discussion. Course materials will be available on an online ChurchNext course. We will also post recordings of the class meetings on the course page, so don’t worry if you can’t attend every class meeting.

Collect for the Epiphany: O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
