Friday 8th January 2021

Hello Ghyll Royd! Welcome back for the Spring Term.

Due to the lockdown announced by the Prime Minister on Monday evening, we have gone straight back online to our DLiTE programme this week. For our September new starters, this is their first experience of our remote learning. Well done to you all for getting up and running online this week and for having a go at the lesson tasks set by your teachers.

Back in school, our nursery and pre-school children are taking care of the grounds for us on their welly walks!
"Hello boys and girls! It's Moz here! I'm missing you at school and I am sure you are missing playing with your friends. Why don't you ask your mummy or daddy if you can send a message to a friend you're missing?"
It's January and there's nowhere to go, we could all do with a bit of good news! We have resource packs from 'The Happy News' full of feel-good facts and space for you to write about your own happy news. Click the below link to download and print off your own Happy Newspaper or ask your class teacher for more information.

Resource Pack
On Monday it's National Clean your Desk Day! Aaron has a tidy desk and a healthy snack to keep him focused on work!

Mrs Downs always has the cleanest desk! Miss Wilson...doesn't!

Send in your pictures of your own desk to us so we can see how you learn from home!

Remember, a tidy desk = a focused mind!
Have you been outside enjoying the snow today?! Samuel had an ice-cream in the cold, Seb and Max made snowmen and Freddie and Florence made snow angels and went sledging!
We'll meet again!
Remember our VE Day celebration back in May? The lyrics to We'll Meet Again are still so relevant today.
Our video has been viewed over 1,000 times and shared by ITV Calendar news! Well done!
As a Microsoft Teams user, you are entitled to all the Office 365 education products for free, courtesy of our school's education accounts. Early Years
Our Early Years children have had a brilliant first week back at Ghyll Royd.

In Little Adventurers we have loved building! We made towers, big and small and there has been some really creative construction. We made cold colour pictures, enjoyed climbing and balloon fun in the sports hall and did lots of singing!

Next week, we will be making bird feeders to hang outside as we explore the cold outdoors. We will be wrapping up warm to do lots of outdoor investigating!

Great Explorers have started their Winter topic on an extra chilly week! Outside, animal toys were trapped in the ice and we had to melt and break the ice to get them out.

We were shown how to fold paper and cut out shapes to make snowflake patterns. We then covered them in icy, colourful glitter.

It was Toby's birthday so we had a birthday party on Wednesday which was a lot of fun!
Reception
Reception have been Mrs Hudson's superstars this week! At just four and five years of age, the class has been so keen to get online and complete their work.

Back in school, the class are always so eager to learn and be challenged, so it's great to see that enthusiasm continuing at home. Mrs Hudson read "A Squash & a Squeeze" after the welcome meeting earlier in the week, which the children enjoyed.

The class began home learning by sharing drawings which showed what they had been up to over Christmas. Florence M got to see her grandparents, Sophia went for a walk with her dog and Harrison got a Hulk for Christmas!!

In Maths, the class has been working out how to make the number 7, and have been counting bigger numbers!

The class has mastered tricky words and have been using pictures to form short sentences. Mrs Hudson also set the class some yoga. PE with Joe returns next week which some of us are very excited about!
Form 1
Form 1 had a steady start to their week of online learning with lots of fun games and activities provided by Mrs Picken. Alex shared with us his fantastic junk model Titanic! Look how brilliant that is?! There were some brilliant pieces of holiday homework submitted - Noah did a bright display on what he'd learnt about Grace Darling and Amadeo wrote a postcard from the perspective of a passenger. All this will help towards answering this term's learning challenge question: Why did the unsinkable ship sink?

We have been looking at the 'ay' and 'ou' sounds in phonics and in English we have been enjoying Mrs Picken reading the Elmer stories. Today was a rather fitting story as it was called 'Elmer in the Snow'!

Make sure you play out in the snow if you have any! It's great fun!
Form 2

There is a running theme throughout this newsletter with fantastic holiday homework projects! Form 2 have done a tremendous job at creating the Titanic and have also done some fantastic research on Grace Darling.

In English we have been describing settings based on a picture, using our senses to build on our descriptions with strong adjectives.

In Maths, we have been counting coins and notes. Sophia used real money to help visualise and count efficiently.

Miss Smith has been busy setting our artists with this half term's tasks, and Samuel made this beautiful Monet painting!

Form 3

Form 3 couldn't wait to share their holiday homework with Mrs Beeson! Some brilliant Roman shields were created. Rory visited an old Roman fort near where he lives and Harry added a chameleon to his mosaic pot as the Romans would have known about them 'due to Africa being part of the Roman Empire'!

We are reading 'Dolphin Boy' by Michael Morpurgo in English and have been reading aloud over Teams to each other. This week we used the story to make inferences and wrote down what we had learned so far.

In Maths we began the week by dividing by 3.
Form 4

A brilliant effort was made by Form 4 with their holiday homework. Mr Laycock is looking forward to seeing the Roman shields in person when we can return to school. George P wanted to visit York over Christmas but due to the different tier restrictions, couldn't. Instead, George had the brilliant idea of researching the remaining architecture then photoshopping himself in front of them.

This week, Form 4 began their online learning with lots of fractions work. After the live lessons, the class could choose which level of work to try with several children completing all three worksheets!

In English, the class are reading about 'The Princess and the Pea' and began part of the text. They answered questions and made inferences from it.

Next week we will have RE and Science, ready for our first full week of remote learning!
Form 5

Form 5 have settled in brillantly this week. In our live lessons the class read two stories together and we discussed what interested us and thought about what genres the stories might have been.

For holiday homework, the children prepared for their 'What Lies Beneath' topic. The class wrote letters, made crossword puzzles and researched news stories in preparation for the new term.

In Maths, we used the bus time tables in Harry Potter to work out timings.

Form 5 also tried their hand at some digital art using toy theater's basic animation package. They were asked to create an animation with a message or story behind it.
Form 6

Form 6 have really impressed Miss Gresswell this week. In English we have written persuasive letters to Antarctic explorer Ernie Shackleton convincing him on why they'd be the best for the jobs on offer on his next expedition. Welcome Captain Brandon, second in command Isabelle, Head Chef Kitty and Surgeon Lucy!

We started Maths by revisiting the work of last term, finding the angles in a triangle. The class had options to do hot, hotter or spicy work to test their maths knowledge. Well done to everyone who tried an extra challenge.

In RE we discussed the term 'freedom' and what freedom means to different religions and examples from the religious teachings.

In PSHE we shared how we would each spend our pocket money and then debated different situations to determine how we would handle things like friends borrowing and not returning pocket money.

Have a brilliant weekend!

Commendations are usually presented in our assembly on Friday morning at 9.00am, where parents and grandparents are welcome. We are so impressed with you all! You are putting in top effort and really impressing us with your work.
Our Nursery is open and from Monday 11th January, the school will be open for key worker children. Have a lovely weekend.
